Softball Ends 2nd Straight Disastrous Season

Post by fredthefalcon »

It's over--Softball 2024 with a record of 6-38, following up on a 2023 7-41. The current coach has an overall record of 13 and 79 for a winning percentage of.141. Has to be the worst back to back softball seasons in BG history but I am not going to try to look that up. DVM's firing iron is heating up and if the axing of HCs in Hockey and Swimming are any indication the search for a new coach will begin early this coming week.

And in MAC play, we finished 2-26 last year and 3-23 this year. Damn that is baaaaaad. Some woman on the Falcon Forum on FB said it is too early to bail on this staff. I beg to differ as we need to find a qualified HC, not some manager of a sports complex.

Laughable that she went with giving the softball coach more time by comparing it to Hallock getting more time with the baseball program. Like that program got cut and reinstated, Hallock had to be given more time with that situation. Meanwhile, softball went from 34-21 in 2022 before these awful two years. Yes, we lost our big-time pitcher to Tennessee when Coach Willis left for Bradley, but a qualified HC could have kept things going in the right direction.

I would expect some movement here very soon. Another tip of the cap to the Moosbrugger/Hughes era of BGSU. The legacy of stink continues.

Couldn't agree more. And look what Hallock is doing...with still a relatively young team. Like you said, 2022 Softball season was very good at 34-21. It's nothing personal. I know Coach Fenton played at BGSU...so did Moe Ankney, Scott Pauluch and Michael Huger. That doesn't always mean success. Her only HC job before this was the JV team in HS. Not even a HS Varsity HC. And at BG, she was on the staff for two years before getting the HC gig so that's 4 years on the staff total.

First phonecall. Look at that resume!
During her nine years at the helm of the GVSU program, Callihan owns a 352-96 overall record (.789), as well as a 170-34 mark (.833) in GLIAC play. She has been named the GLIAC Coach of the year each of the last six seasons.

She is a GVSU grad so might be tough to pry her away but that record is something esle!

This one was a BiG time wrong hire...can't argue that.

I don't think she's going anywhere. Judging by Derek's track record so far, a change is usually made immediately after the season ends. Season's been over for 2 weeks and she's still here.

Oh well, she only has to go 41-7 to get back to a .500 record.

I still think a change is coming. She might have only been given a two year contract initially and it's possible it runs through May. It was a hire made by you know who, so it could be an odd situation.

That is a good point. It could be they are letting her contract run out. But, it feels like all of Derek's previous changes have been made immediately. I think he would've wanted to make a change ASAP to start the hiring process ASAP, given that a lot of other jobs have opened and are opening around the country. I could be wrong, and I often am, but I feel like he's gonna give her one more year.

Math is hard for me & it's late at night, but I think she has to go something like 81-7 to get to .500. Shouldn't be too difficult to do. Go 41-3 next year, & then you only have to go 40-4 the following year to reach .500.

Maybe. Nothing about this hire was normal. Therefore, I doubt the contract is a normal standard either. It’s possible letting the contract expire is what’s best in that scenario. I wouldn’t worry too much about the timing. Derek’s wife used to coach college softball and with the record the last two seasons, it’s a long rebuild anyway.

All are valid points, especially the one about Mrs. Derek (Stephanie?) having a softball background. I went to a couple home games this season & saw her there every time. It'd be interesting to know what her thoughts might be, & how much sway she has in this situation. As someone who is married, it usually makes life easier if you listen to your spouse when they have an opinion. Happy wife, happy life and all that.
