Baseball scholarship increase?

Post by Flipper »

During the College World Series on ESPN, they said discussion were under way to increase the number of scholarships available for baseball from the 11.7 ttl goin to 32 players. I'd like to see it...

Speaking of the CWS...portal madness has hit the sport. Texas A&M's coach...within a day after losing the series by a run...bolts to arch rival Texas to take that job. Two of their best players..potential 1-1 in the 2025 draft Jace Laviolette and 2B Kaeden Kent are in the portal. The fans who supported the team and travelled to the series have to be angry and disappointed over those developments
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I don’t know how anything is getting done right now…schools/conferences are literally doing anything they want with no enforcement of any penalties. The SEC could announce tomorrow that their Baseball programs will offer full scholarships to 30 players per school and dare someone to do something about it. Everyone would just stand down and let it happen.

The SEC and BIG10 have destroyed college athletics. Honestly not even sure the kids will have to go to class in football and basketball soon.

I’m probably in the minority that full scholarships and a small additional stipend should be the max these kids need. If they can negotiate their own NIL deals…that’s fine….but schools paying large amounts of money to kids and then listening to women’s sports start demanding they deserve it too. It’s just a mess.

It now seems pretty clear baseball will be going to 34 scholarship starting with the 2025 season. Of course, that's OPTIONAL and most schools won't be doing that because they simply cannot afford it (along with the proposed increases in football, basketball and others, and the extra scholarships you'd need for Title IX).

Given BG wasn't even able to come up with the 11 scholarship limit that is now in effect, the idea of tripling that number is a total fantasy.

BG may not be able to do this, but they will benefit from the trickle down effect of the BIG schools. The SEC/BIG10 schools that opt into this will have to reduce roster sizes from 40 to 34. Those players will need somewhere to go, could just be a weaker school within their own conference. The quality of baseball should get better at the D1 level over time and it will be much harder to get recruited at the high school level when more schools opt in to giving 34 scholarships
