Positives from tonight are we have improved special teams and have a stable of running backs. Quarterback play was decent and play calling actually made sense. Negatives for me are the defense. We looked slow and got pushed around a lot.

FINAL: BG 41, Fordham 17

Strong performance in the opener. Offense put up almost 500 yards (including going over 300 on the ground), defense had 4.5 sacks and made a number of good plays. Didn’t get any takeaways, but also didn’t turn the ball over. Bazelak was an efficient 15/22, and Lucian Anderson looked more than capable of being the change of pace QB with Orth unavailable. I’m curious what this O will look like when RJ Garcia is good to go. After a shaky start, the kicker looked good and the punter was obviously a standout.

Since it was the first game, I will attribute some of the weaker parts of our performance to rust or guys still getting back to playing. Got some things to clean up, but only so much to nitpick when you win by 24.

@ Penn State next Saturday at noon. Not gonna be easy at all, but let’s see what we’ve got.

First 1-0 start since 2019, and only the 2nd time since 2013.

Looked good.
Pass Defense was a bit rough but that might come together. Offense wasn't opened up.
Lucian Anderson will get some good snaps this year. Could be the starter next year.
Defense was fast and flying around. Looked good.
OL was maybe a strength. tough to know against this level but seems like an improvement.
Wouldn't have liked to see some more TDS from Bazelek to boost his heisman chances but 1 on the ground doesn't hurt.
I thought the crowd looked really good.

Wimberley is injured, appears the same for RJ Garcia who transferred from Kansas State. Did not see Demetrius Hardamon out there either. The latter is a big loss.

Tough to complain about doing what you're supposed to do and taking care of business. Stewart was a beast. I missed most of the 3rd for traveling home, but the parts of the game I saw the OL was pretty dominant...nice to see even if it is an FCS foe.

I still don't think much of Bazelak and was concerned how frequently our secondary got beaten over the top; we were fortunate Fordham was unable to take advantage of that.

PSU and A&M are gonna be different tests. It'll be a success if the score of those games are anything closer than last nights.

Perfect opener...team gets off on the right foot... students get to have a fun party in great weather. Get through the next two in good health and still have a winnable game ahead of MAC play.

Nice...

Wimberly was noted awhile back that he was out for the year, so we all know about him and its been confirmed by BG. I originally thought the new injuries that SL mentioned the other day were on the OL. But after going to the game last night and seeing the OL appeared intact (and they looked good - FINALLY), after watching the sidelines, it appeared to be RJ Garcia who I saw that had what looked like a cast on his left leg. He was pushing himself along on the sidelines with one of those scooters things that you rest your injured leg on while pushing yourself along with the healthy leg. I have no idea when this injury occurred, but if it was recently, he's probably out for the year, which is a blow because he was slated as a starter prior to fall camp and BG has a need there after losing the top-3 WR's from last year. RB Jamal Johnson appears to be one of the guys they moved to WR, which is likely one of the guys who SL was referring to when saying "moving guys around." Johnson did well in spots in what looked like the slot last night. BG didn't have to last night - but I don't think we took a single shot downfield that I can remember all night long. Malcolm Johnson could be a verticle stretch guy but we didn't show or attempt anything last night. I'm not sure who or if we have a WR who can take the top off a defense because, well, we didn't attempt or show it yet. Jaylon Tillman was on the field quite a bit but I don't think he had a single target. Finn Hogan looks like he bulked up and looks more like a Flex TE to me right now. I wouldn't be surprised if they try and get him to trim down to focus more as a WR this year now. Shawn Thigpen is supposed to be talented, but he continues to be injured (this guys seems to always be hurt). The loss of Garcia puts our WR unit in a bind as we must keep the guys mentioned above healthy. Hardamon was walking around in a jersey but I have a strong feeling he's going to be another one of the guys SL says is out for the year. He suffered a broken neck vs Michigan and planned on coming back this year, and was cleared last I heard, but I'm getting a feeling that isn't going to happen. His return would soften the loss of Cashius Howell transferring to Texas A&M. Last night - while just one game - was extremely noticeable that we don't have an EDGE rusher like Howell. We had good push from our interior guys last night, but the pressure off the edge doesn't appear it's going to be like it was last year with Howell, even in just one game (albeit an inferior foe). Not sure why Camden Orth wasn't dressed. Remember, he had concussion issues last year. SL said he's finally going to talk about these injuries he mentioned on Monday. But I'm now pretty sure Garcia and Hardamon are going to be two of the guys he's going to mention.
