“A lot of crap” going on
This thread title is not in relation to SL. It is, however, in relation to something he brought up in the postgame presser after the Toledo game. He clearly was upset and irritated about some issues going on with the team. He wouldn’t go into specific detail, but he did say there are some things going on that are very distracting, not fair to the kids, and that there needs to be rule changes. Trying to read between the lines I am thinking it might have to do something with possible tampering, and/or the NIL and transfer portal issues. I have also picked up in recent weeks that he seems to be very frustrated about player availability (or lack thereof). It’s unfortunate to hear something like this going on because this team has had a lot of guys return and there’s a lot for them to play for this year. I have also noticed a few players are no longer listed on the roster. Without knowing any details, this probably would explain some of the drop off that we’ve seen after the Penn State and Texas A&M games with this team. Hopefully they’ve got some of these issues worked out. He did make mention that he feels some of these issues are hopefully behind them at this point. But clearly something has been going on the last several weeks.
GO BG!!!

Walker and Gibby were speculating something was up with RJ Garcia. He's been cleared to play by all accounts the past few weeks and obviously nothing. Good to know Scot kinda had this baked in as a potential excuse if they lost the Toledo game.BGSU33 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 8:59 pm This thread title is not in relation to SL. What's rich to me is him and other coaches saying this stuff while they interview for other jobs before seasons are over. OK for them to do it, but not OK for players to listen to other schools, right?

Poor Scot. He makes more than the President but he has to deal with all this crap. He better learn to handle the crap better than he coaches football. Because these athletes don’t live in a world where their value is a scholarship fantasy anymore. These overpaid college athletics people crack me up. The college athletic bubble is about to burst and having his loss to Toledo excuse ready, shows how unprepared he and so many others at BGSU are to handle it.

I gotta know - did you enjoy watching the game on Saturday? Or were you watching with tears in your eyes as we kicked Toledo's ass up and down the field? I'm genuinely curious if you enjoy wins. You never come with anything to say when we win. I just have to know what it's like to be guest44.

Someone in the media should reach out regarding the “disruption in college athletics”. Is actually paying for the labor the disruption?

Re: “A lot of crap” going on
I actually don't have much of a problem with him venting a little about issues if they are along these lines. Again, I don't know exactly what they are and can only speculate. And he didn't come out and say what they were or name names, but he clearly looked over at the players in the room with him (of to the side until it was their turn to talk at the mic) as a reinforcement that those who are committed to team appear to be together. That's the message I took from it. But whatever the issues are, it sounds like they are/were affecting the guys on the team and that isn't a good thing. He clearly said it was a disruption and wasn't fair to the players. So I can back him based on that if that's the situation.
The Garcia thing does appear to be another issue going on. Remember, the WR unit was the hardest hit unit on offense and maybe even on the entire team from the production lost standpoint. Garcia joined through the portal and was slated as a started opposite of Johnson. SL had a lot of praise for him in the offseason and really liked him. Garcia was obviously hurt to start the year so he wasn't playing from the jump. However, it sounds like he was cleared prior to Akron but to best of my knowledge, meaning he only missed 4 games, but it looks like he hasn't played a single down yet. Reading between the lines, I'm guessing Garcia doesn't want to play. I have no inside info but based on what I can piece together, this seems like the logical guess at this point. He's already red-shirted in 2021 at Kansas State and played two seasons in 2022 (14 games) and 2023 (12 games) before coming to BG. I'm guessing the sticking point boils down to a medical redshirt. That's just my guess. If Garcia was cleared prior to Akron, he still had a chance to play in up to 9 or 10 games if BG makes the MACC and/or a bowl. If he has passed on the chance to play in the last 4 games since then, it would be extremely shocking to see him play at this point. Below is what I could find on a medical redshirt. Looking at that, I'm guessing #2 would be the issue at hand. If he's been cleared to play but doesn't want to play, this could be what's going on. And I could understand SL's frustration if this is indeed the case. I could also see Garcia not wanting to miss part of a season, but if you're cleared after just 4 games, that's still a majority of the season left to be played. If he wasn't cleared until midseason or with only a few games left, I could see him not wanting to come back at that point to exhaust a year of eligibility. But with 8 or 9 games left to play after being cleared? Yeah, I could understand some friction coming after that.
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:
1. The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
2. The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
3. The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
4. The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

Re: “A lot of crap” going on
RJ Garcia's younger brother committed to playing at BG, so him holding onto his eligibility to go elsewhere and play would be very weird.

Re: “A lot of crap” going on
BS. They deserve to be compensated like any other adult for their services. People buy tickets to come see them play, buy merchandise with the university's name on it because they enjoy the product on the field/court/ice. Kids getting academic scholarships can work and do whatever to get additional supplemental income, why can't athletes? The NCAA has gotten away with it for so long that the stodgy old guard can't bear to witness it be any different. It's the NCAA's fault that we're here, and the ship has sailed on putting rules in place to manage it because they refused to acknowledge the issue in the first place.gspointer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 9:38 amPaying n the form of a free education and tutoring etc should be enough.guest44 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 8:21 am https://x.com/pres_rogers/status/185063 ... Re: “A lot of crap” going on
There's a lot of interesting stuff going on...including the push to have student athletes classified as University employees with collective bargaining rights.
If SL is getting frustrated now...wait until something like that happens

I do not get the sense he is mad about players getting paid. I get the sense he is mad about agents bargaining on behalf of players in the middle of the season with the threat of taking more money from another school, which is still forbidden but is happening every day.

Coaches do the exact same thing, that's my issue with all this. The hypocrisy is rich.BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:08 am I do not get the sense he is mad about players getting paid. In the meantime BGSU is telling you they have no money for athletics while buying up property, and sitting on the old golf course as it looks like a landfill in several spots. Maybe someday this disruption in athletics will be so severe it will force Rogers to mow his own lawn or possibly prepare his own food.
