I don't know if you all were at the game, but there was a pretty substantial wind from the south the entire game (believe me, I was between the American flag and the replay screen and the wind kept the flag in a position to block my view of replays the whole time). We were into the wind in the 4th quarter. Not only that our place kicker has been struggling with shin splints and has really been inaccurate (see the missed extra point). We have a true freshman who I thought might get a chance to kick but I guess the game was too close to risk a freshman. That is definitely a testament to the quality team (coaches on down) that BG fielded. We expected a tough game and were not disappointed at all. Good luck to the Falcons the rest of the way.

I *thought* there was a wind, based on the kickoffs going out of the endzone one way, and landing around the 15 the other. Though I thought it showed on ABC before Suisham's kick that it was 0 MPH. Maybe it said 8 or 9 and I just didn't have a good look.

That makes the decision easier, I guess.

Scott D. wrote:I think going for it on 4th down more than once was a two part thing. Stoops goes for it on 4th and 5 or less maybe more than we'd care for, but he's usually successful when he does it. The other part of the equation, is that DiCarlo has been fighting against shin splints for most of the practices due to 'overkicking' between the spring and summer because the highly touted freshman kicker we have was injured for most of those two practice periods. I think he was more trying to save DiCarlo's leg, and see how the offense would respond in that type of situation.
Hey folks, think back to the third quarter. OK was going the way where kickoffs were sailing through the end zone. They had the ball 4th and 2 at the 25. I think the score at the time was 24-10. In what was a more likely FG situtation than the end of the game, Stoops went for it there also. Also evidence to Scott D's claim above that Stoops likes to go for it on fourth down. Anybody who doesn't understand why OK went for it on 4th and 5 at the BG 28 in the fourth quarter with 4:00 to go, does not understand football strategy at all. IMO

I very much enjoyed the trip to Oklahoma. I thought the Sooner fans were just great to their BG counterparts before, during and after the game. My hat is off to them and I acknowledged this hospitality to some Sooner officials.

As far as the game goes, I have read most of this thread and Iwould add the following for what is worth (not much!):

1. Coach Stoops never came close to a decision to run up the score. This was a competitve game all the way- all the way even in the third when we had some problems. The wind etc comments are correct. Whatever decision Stoops made when is A OK to coin a phrase. They had to make sure they won the game- which was a 13 point game with 8 or 9 minutes to go or so.

2. The criticisms of tackling, LB on wrong man, little DB's, Coach Brandon's comments and whatever defense problems by Option etc are fine, I guess, but I would have to go with way, WAY overstated. From my vantage in Sooner Land, I saw by FAR the best football team Bowling Green has ever played. I go back to '68 as far as home/road games go and it is not even close in my opinion. Therefore, I would say when we dive and miss etc etc, some of this may be because the other teams players are much, much faster and quicker. Clayton, Jones, Peterson, other WR's, OL headed for NFL and a 24 year old Heisman Trophy winner? I give the boys and coaches a little slack. Can we get better and coach better? Obviously. Go off the deep end? Not close.

3. Omar and his throwing motion? Hmmm. First ever start with guys coming off the corner like four Jason Babins? #10, #80? Unbelievable athletes ready to disrupt anybody. Can he get his arm up? Sure.Could he have squared his body and hit Cole Magner a time or two instead rushing his throws? Sure. Could he have made sharper cuts up the field running? Sure. Could he have paniced and thrownthree INT's? Easily. The play in which he was nearly sacked, chased by three Okies, waited for Pope to get off the ground and flipped it underhanded to PJ for the big first down told me just a whole bunch. This guy could be a very special player later. Anybody wonder how J5 plays if his first start at QB as a soph is in this game? I love Josh, but I could not have been happier with Omar.

Yeah, I know. I went on and on on the Omar deal.

4. Other good news points were special teams- excellent overall (Perkins-return man extraordinaire). Suisham super. Also overall organization. One delay penalty, one illegal procedure I believe. Pretty darn good for first game. OL did OK- I think Liechtensteiger did pretty well considering his last football game was gainst Delphos Jefferson HS. Newsom is a tremendous player. Perry showed flashes as others said he would. DL worked very, very hard IMO. Maybe there is a moreacrobatic and fun to watch wide out than Sharon in our league-or maybe not. Magner will have a big year; they tried to take him out of the game, but he had a couple fine runs including one of those classic ten yarders where he is hit by a couple guys, put the hand down, keeps going etc. I love this guy.

OK, others had a better view on TV. I just think live the opponents were unbeliveably fast. Great effort against a team that I predict right now will play in the national title game.

Everybody get to our home opener. I mean everybody. Salsa- great meeting you and I hope you had a safe trip home.

Go Falcons!

Stoops wasn't running up the score.

First - Calisooner is an ass. Every OU fan there was complimentary afterwards but there is always one in every crowd.
Second - I was at the game and was proud of the Falcon's effort. Ou was too big and powerfull up front but I'll bet that will be one of the two closest games OU plays this year.
Third - there was a pretty substantial wind from that end of the stadium. the 47 yarder would have been closer to 55 with that wind so it made sence to go for it on 4th and 5. That drive and the 3 points ended the game. Stoop wasn't running it up. It helped Shaun make his too from 47.
Fourth - after listening to a pretty good amount of smack in the OU stands during most of the 3rd Qtrt - it was great to hear the hush come over the field when BG pulled within 13 early in the 4th. You could hear the coaches shout from the opposite side of the field from the upper deck.

Great game played by both teams. OU beat us. Stoops DID NOT run up the score on us - we are not Texas.

I was upset we didn't use Magner more, but found out after the game that he had a broken toe. Explains that.

Omar is for real. I have no qualms about Omar and how he will do. I especially liked reading the comments of the sports editor of the OKC paper yesterday when he mentioned that Omar has the makings of a stud. In addition, the radio crew on the postgame show was talking Omar up and wondering how K-State let him go to BG. If you weren't in Norman on Saturday, make sure you get to Perry Stadium this Saturday. OMAR IS FOR REAL!

That wind was something else. You could kick the ball through the endzone in the closed end and the ball would hang at the 15 the other way. Some of you caught that on TV, but it was something else.

FalconFan1 was getting the BG faithful going! Great to talk to Salsa and have the opportunity to meet him without having to go all the way to New Mexico. Great to see Hartmom62 again (see you at LCC in a few weeks).

Finally, let me just say that I may not have been an OU fan before the game, but I am definitely one after that game. Not once, NOT ONCE, did I hear anything negative come from one Sooner fan. We were on campus and walking around the better part of Friday afternoon. Students treated us great - showing us where buildings were located without sending us two miles out of the way. THe OU fans on Saturday morning were great as well. We walked from the Duck Pond to the stadium and had numerous fans asking us questions and answering ours. PURE CLASS.

Great time in OKC and Norman. Now if we can get AD Krebs to schedule Texas A&M.

hell, just waiting in a bar in Indianapolis for them to put the game on a couple TVs, a Sooner fan and I talked a little about the game, his first question was about Omar. "So I hear you had to replace your QB or something?" Yeah, but just watch. :D

I have to say, I have never heard 83,000 fans go totally silent until Newson intercepted Mr. Hiesman and went in for 6!! It was at that point that Stoops got a big lump in his throat. 83,000 scared OU fans!! I guarantee the Sooners ran some laps on Sunday!!!

I agree with some of the comments about Omar. He almost looked like he was trying to throw side arm. OU's D-line is too big for that!! I would have liked to see him air out a few more. They did try a couple and one was real close. He has an arm it just seemed to be under used. His movement was very good. However it seemed like they called too many plays where he was throwing back against the field.

We also had a great experience with the OU fans. And living in Texas my kids just may go to OU, beats the Texas fans!! Now it could have been because they didn't see us as a threat or are they just that nice. The only foul language we heard all weekend was from a BG fan. Didn't really appreciate my kids hearing it. Anyway not a complaint just a fact.

Now let's beat the rest!!!

OptionQB wrote:I'm sorry, but I don't get the same warm and fuzzy feeling that most of you will express throughout the weekend.

1. While looking good for most of the games, Omar's release point is way too low for someone that is 6'4" and not named John Navarre. Knocked-down passes will become a regular thing if this is not addressed at some point. His patience, calm, resolve and poise were amazing though.

2. We have to figure out a quicker way to snap the ball . . . Granted, we won't be in front of 82,000 again, but that needs to be addressed.

3. OU didn't blitz a lot, but other than Andy Grubb not keeping track of the cadence, I was pleasantly surprised by our O-Line, particularly new starters Andrew Hart and Korey Lichtensteiger. It's a little different than NWC competition, eh Korey? But he held up just fine.

4. 160 lb defensive backs will not cut it against top-flight D-1 competition. For someone who is 5'9"(Clayton) to put down a shoulder and run over Terrill Mayberry for another 6 yards is inexcusable. The overall defensive philosophy and tackling was atrocious and given more time, Kejaun Jones and Adrian Peterson could've had any number they wanted. I will not only pick on our smallish DBs, but our smallish D-Line too. They were rarely subsituted for and we're constantly blown off the line. Granted it's probably the best O-line in America, but we need to get bigger, stronger and faster in a hurry.

5. Keon at times looked to be the only guy on D willing to accept the OU challenge.

6. The receivers and PJ played exceptionally well and caused problems for OU all day.

7. Again, I just think we hit the panic button with this coaching staff in big game situations all too quick. Brandon's response to stopping OU's defense at halftime was "to keep our defense off the field." That's both encouraging and inspiring. It was nice to see us give up so soon on the pass in the second half only to find success later as well.
I agree with some, and disagree with some.

2. I don't know what Omar had to discuss before every play in the first half. It cost us five yards once or twice and really disrupted the flow.

3. Great job O line!

4/5. We weren't tackling well b/c almost everytime the first defender went for the ball first and not to make the tackle. Keon is sweet and forced two fumbles, the rest of the team needs to focus on making the tackle first and forcing a turnover second.

6. The WR's dropped too many balls, and where was Magner all day? Pope did a great job.

Probably the same one that knocked the kid over in Texas to get the ball at a Ranger's game. Talk about not practicing what he preaches.
