1/8 vs. Buffalo

Post by bghkyfan74 »

Jumped to a 13-0 lead and then lost by double digits. I don’t think the women’s team gets as much criticism as they should, especially the coach. Everyone is quick to go after Loeffler and Simon, which makes sense because those are the big ones. But Chmiel is disappointing. There are never adjustments and it seems like our recruiting has moved to looking for raw players who “might” develop. What happened to recruiting fundamental players to this team (that’s what the community likes)? I have heard rumblings over the past couple of weeks that there will be more players in the transfer portal than on the roster come April.

It’s certainly surprising, given his resume, how meh his program has become. It’s also wild that they have 3 “power conference” wins this year, but are also capable of losing to basically everyone. Very inconsistent group from top to bottom.

And I acknowledge that Buffalo is a really good program. But Bowling Green is supposed to be that, too. I think the criticism for this program doesn’t exist because most people don’t watch unless they are good, so they never really have anything to complain about. This program makes it too easy to tune it out, and that’s not how it’s supposed to be here.

He has been out coached by Buffalo every game since he got to BG. His recruiting outside a couple of the original Fralick commits has been mediocre at best. They need more shooters ASAP.

Agree with this.

Velesco, Fleming, McGuff, Fearne, Gerken, Donahue, Seisel are all Fralick recruits.

Kohler (needed a school late in the process), Porter (needed a school late in the process), and Ellis (needed a school late in the process) are the only 3 that have sort have panned out and I would say that only 2 of them have really panned out so far.

That was a frustrating game to watch...they def lost their composure in the 4th qtr. Beginning to have my doubts that Chmiel is the guy
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Certainly beginning to feel that way. I want him (and therefore the program) to be successful, and I am still rooting for him to figure it out, but taking over a 30+ win, championship level program and being 1 game over .500 a year and a half later is certainly not what I expected when he was hired.

I am getting those Jennifer Roos vibes which was doing well initially on the recruits of the previous coach but precipitously going in a downward spiral after those players left. Next year will begin to tell the tale on Coach Fred's way forward at BG

100%. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. I know some big donors for the program are already talking about no longer supporting financially/giving less because they don’t like the direction of the program (as they’ve seen in games and practices).

I pretty much agree with all of the above. I believe we have very good talent on this squad, however it’s highly undeveloped, fundamentally. Granted, we have lots of young talent, but they all have undeveloped strengths and weaknesses. Donahue is good defensively, but cannot contribute offensively, as she can’t shoot, and struggles from the free throw line as well. Coach Fred has also been having Porter posting up high setting screens, when she should be posting up down low where she becomes a scoring threat. We have three scorers (Velasco, Fleming, and Kohler), maybe four with Gerken, on this squad who can score inside and out. We need great scorers, not just great shooters! We also have way too many illegal screens and dumb fouls because the opponents offense continues to beat our defense. We dribble the ball WAY too much, as dribblers are easy to guard. Quick, efficient passing is extremely difficult to guard. With all these coaches on staff, why are they missing what is obvious to the fans? Our turnovers are way too numerous….again a lack of exercising (or teaching) fundamental skills. Are the coaches working with these players to sharpen their offensive (scoring) skills, including setting good screens? (McGuff, Donahue, Ellis, Moxey) It’s obvious that Porter worked intensively on her free throws in the last year, and it’s a marked improvement. My bottom line is this, to the coaching staff……FUNDAMENTALS, FUNDAMENTALS, FUNDAMENTALS! You cannot get a team full of fundamentally unsound players to run D1 college offensive and defensive schemes effectively. It doesn’t work. I’ve said enough for now, but I believe my points are clear. My honest opinions……GO FALCONS!!!

I will now refer to you with all of my thoughts regarding this team. It seems we have similar viewpoints, which is probably shared with many other fans as well. A stretch of 3 winnable games before heading to that school up north, let's win and get on a roll.
