CCHA QUARTERFINALS: vs. Michigan Tech (3/7-9)

Post by mbenecke »

Folks, the postseason has arrived.

The first playoff series of the Dennis Williams era is here, and it’s a doozy - our Falcons (16-13-4) are hosting the hated Huskies from Houghton (16-15-3). Game 1 on Friday, Game 2 on Saturday, and Game 3 on Sunday, if necessary. Official game times aren’t posted yet on the BG website, but it’s safe to assume it will be the traditional 7:07, 7:07, 5:07 format. I encourage all who are able to attend the games in person (I will be there for Game 2 - just got my tickets!), but if you aren’t, certainly support the Falcons from afar by rocking your orange and brown and watching along on Midco.

In the regular season series over Thanksgiving break, Tech took Game 1 and Game 2 finished as a tie, with BG taking the shootout. Despite being at home and being the higher seed, this will be a massive challenge for us. Tech swept us in this position last year, and they went on to win the Mason Cup. This is a program that gives us fits, and I am certain that they will bring a healthy number of fans along for the series as well. With students off campus for spring break through next weekend, this is an all hands on deck situation. It’s on US to create a hell of a playoff atmosphere. So let’s go do it.

NOTABLE STATS:

Goals Per Game: BG 2.52 (6th), MTU 2.76 (4th)
Goals Allowed Per Game: BG 2.45 (3rd), MTU 2.65 (4th)
Shots on Goal Per Game: BG 34.09 (1st), MTU 29.94 (3rd)
Power Play Percentage: BG .204 (6th), MTU .262 (2nd)
Penalty Kill Percentage: BG .790 (5th), MTU .726 (8th)
Face-off Percentage: BG .527 (1st), MTU .511 (3rd)
Blocked Shots Per Game: BG 9.55 (8th), MTU 11.82 (5th)

GOALIE STATS:

MTU
Derek Mullahy (Sr.) - 21 GP, 2.64 GAA, .900 SV%
Ryan Manzella (Fr.) - 13 GP, 2.54 GAA, .905 SV%

BGSU
Christian Stoever (Sr.) - 15 GP, 1.95 GAA, .939 SV%
Cole Moore (So.) - 20 GP, 2.80 GAA, .906 SV%

Go Falcons! Beat Tech!

The email from the Athletic Department says game times are 7,7, and 5.

The UP is supposed to be getting slammed with 2 feet of snow in the next 2 days. Anybody know anything about when Tech might be traveling down?

One of their fans said the team was still deciding last night on whether to leave this morning or wait until Thursday morning.

I sure hope they got out of there, they're currently under a Blizzard Warning with 10-16" of additional snow to fall and winds up to 50 mph. It's actually snowing so hard right now the visibility is nearly zero

Tech is taking donations to send their student section and pep band for the weekend. With the round ball game starting at the same time as the playoff game on Fri we may be looking at a Tech takeover of the Slate.

Especially with no students on campus, I’d imagine you’re right.

Time for the 30 and up student section to take the wheel and fight back. Lol

Tech made it as far as Toledo today. Looks like the series is a go.

BGSU GOAL!

BG gets a goal very late in the first after carrying most of the period. They reviewed it and overturned the call in the ice… to actually be a goal! 1-0 Falcons.

Hard scramble at the end of that powerplay in the middle of the 2nd. Feels like we should have scored a couple of goals there. Instead it stays 1-0.

Refs miss a blatant spear, and at this point I am not even surprised. I am more surprised they overturned the questionable no goal call on our goal.

Going to need a strong third, got a little sloppy in the second

Tech ties it in the early 3rd.

Brutal decision to make a line change there. We had 4 guys slow to get on the ice and we never had a chance there.

And on the next rush, Stoever takes a stick to the back of the head to no call.
