Re: Remember me?
Yep. He shot 21% from three as a sophomore and less than 40% from the field all 3 years here. Glad it’s working out for him as a 5th year senior, but it’s not BG’s fault he decided to bounce when Huger got fired. Lol

Re: Remember me?
I really thought Kaden was going to be a good player. Obviously, I don't begrudge him for leaving and I'd never expect somebody to stick around when their coach gets canned, but he's the perfect example of why Huger was such an awful coach.
Huger just gave the ball to whoever his best guard was and told him to go find points. Matheny's shot looked so good from simply watching him shoot, but in games he never got open looks...we didn't pass the ball, we didn't run around screens, so way too many of his shots would be step back, off the dribble, NBA range, etc.
Just like Frye before him he was put in a position to look like an inefficient chucker due to a garbage "system". There's a reason why Justin Turner got less efficient every season here as well...the entire Huger philosophy for guards was to just keep leaning on them with more and more weight until they snapped.
Matheny leaves this shithole and shoots 52% from 2 both years (which shocks me because I never thought he'd be able to finish at the rim), and 39%/41% from 3.
AKA he's a productive 2nd/3rd scoring option for a team with a concept of how to play basketball.

I'm with you. I thought he had a ton of potential. And he probably would have fixed a lot of our issues the past 2 years. It just didn't work out here - and we all know why.

Re: Remember me?
If he didn’t transfer when he did, he would have left after last season just like Hill and Agee did. The woulda shoulda coulda stuff two years later in the portal era is beyond stupid. As is analyzing the 1968 stuff at this point. Want a good team? Buy it. And keep buying it until you buy the right combo. Akron has invested people and they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon unless they botch the coach.

Ditto 100%! Huger, great guy and Peron but a horrible basketball coach.

Re: Remember me?
Just to close the book on this:
9 points on 3/13 shooting and 3/12 from three in a 29 point loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Not sure he was putting us over the top here or anything like that. Certainly not enough for a thread to rub it in 2 years after the fact. Lol

I watched the game and thought, “Yep, same player. Hits some big shots, shoots a ton of others, and always looks extremely out of control.”mbenecke wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 10:57 am Just to close the book on this:

I was rooting for them, but the entire team choked on the big stage.
ROLL ALONG!!!

The days of the MAC or most mid majors competing in the NCAA tournament are going to be few and far between moving forward.

I'm afraid you're right. The upset that we all love were oftentimes built on veteran rosters taking down younger but more talented teams.
Now that all of our good players can bolt for 6figure NIL deals we'll never be able to keep a roster together long enough to build that veteran team.

I liked him but the kid was also a massive defensive liability. It would not have helped at all having him on this years roster.
