It may be my (wrong) perception but once again this year some of the top players from the Columbus area are going to other MAC schools, you know the ones that have actually won something in recent years, and it's very rare to see any of them even talk about BGSU. For instance, three of the top players from this season: Jordan Fisher of Reynoldsburg is headed to OU; Tai Perkins of Westerville North is headed to Akron; and Landon Vanderwarker of Delaware Hayes is headed to Kent. I almost never hear of players signing with BG.
I see the same thing in football pretty regularly, too. Far more players going to OU and Miami than BG. It's a shame our coaches don't recruit this area more successfully since it is growing and the talent level has been increasing quite a bit over the years.
This was a long time beef of mine with Huger, especially. We'd spend way more money on recruiting than our MAC brethren, we'd bring in talent from all over the Eastern half of the country, then get walked by a bunch of Ohio kids at OU/UT/Akron.
I'm willing to hear that the local kids want to play for these programs that have a much longer track record of success, but I still think we'd be greatly served to land some talent in our own backyard. We've got the kid from Whitmer slated to come next year, can't get much more local than that, but that's probably as much about Stacey's effort as our own.
Perhaps, the portal world changes some of this, but still. I'd always focus on bringing a top tier player (or two) from Juco ranks as well. But they have to be kids willing to fight and claw for every win on both ends of the court. No more guys that survived at that level by putting up stats on one side with no effort on the other.
