If my memory is correct, international students cannot collect NIL. So, maybe we recruit our team from overseas?bghkyfan74 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 2:24 pmHe did say that Khayat "should be" back next year.bghkyfan74 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 2:24 pm Mom and I were downtown at Grounds for Thought and saw one of our assistant coaches. He said Campbell and Butler will "most likely" transfer. Said Campbell is receiving offers of $400,000 that we cannot compete with.

ROLL ALONG!!!
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
This definitely isn't a reliable source, but someone on twitter said he has Ohio State transfer center Austin Parks headed to BG. 6'10" former 4-star center who never fully broke the rotation at OSU.

Been seen in some of the BG bars. Losing Campbell will be unfortunate.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
I was hearing that he was deciding between TSUN, BG, and Akron. We were pushing hard for him but were unsure if we would be able to compete NIL wise with the other two.
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
And that’s just how it is here. Guys are ALWAYS going to pick the programs that off money over us until we get a serious NIL program going.bghkyfan74 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 2:03 pmI was hearing that he was deciding between TSUN, BG, and Akron. Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Akron has the money to keep its entire roster together. Miami has secured a good majority of the roster. The rest of the MAC, well not so much.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
If this past weekend was any indication, mid-majors are going to have to be aggressive in NIL if they wish to be competitive in March. That continuity is the only way they're going to be able to compete.

Seems like the simple answer is to bring back the rule where transfers have to sit for a year.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
It's a non-starter legally. SCOTUS basically told the NCAA they have no standing in differentiating student-athletes from regular students.
It's going to require a collective bargaining process where schools/conferences will pay players as regular employees under contracts no different than professional athletes.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
I'm actually surprised there haven't been more mid- to low-major programs that haven't had some uber-rich alumni bankroll a successful roster yet. It's not like there aren't ultra-wealthy alum from schools like Miami or Central Michigan or BG. Hell, the CEO of Adobe is a BG guy who also met his wife here. He makes about $50 million a year, so why can't we get a fraction of that? (I know they have to have a vested interest in both BG and sports, but my point stands)

Also, I would think a school like Toledo is probably towards the top of NIL money in the MAC, and so far they have SEVEN players in the portal. Getting absolutely decimated, and it's not like most of those guys are going to big programs after the year they had.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
We’ll go listen to Tod K’s postgame presser after losing in the MAC Tournament. He commented on the guys who transferred the year before and how they did nothing to advance their professional careers. At least our coach knows better than to do that.
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Yeah that is so stupidly tone-deaf. Simon gets it. You should be touting every single player who leaves your program for a large NIL deal elsewhere. I'd love to live in a world where we could pay a few hundred grand to keep Agee, Hill, and Campbell here, but that isn't the reality. So if we cannot compete to retain talent then leverage the talent that leaves as a recruiting tool.
I also hope that coach Simon's experience with Hill & Campbell here shows how clearly preferable it is to bring kids up from Juco vs taking scraps from the Big10/SEC/whatever
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Reports that Akron's entire core group of players with eligibility (which were most of their major contributors) are coming back next year. Legitimately could be a top 25 team. Frankly, refreshing to see and I hope they are successful for the sake of the MAC.
