I think the NHL chopped both legs off at the knees by cancelling the season. I think the owners are SORELY overestimating the number of fans that will return with open arms once the league starts to play again. I don't think hockey has the staying power in this country to recover, and I think the league will be begging ANYONE to give them a tv contract. I think fans in Canada are starting to figure out than they can live without NHL hockey (although they certainly won't abandon the game itself).
Did I personally miss the NHL season? Not really, if you want to get down to it. I was so busy with work and trying to keep up on the CCHA from oblivion that I didn't need any more hockey than I already had my hands full with!
There were times I really cared, and it made me mad as hell that they weren't talking, and other times, it was like waiting for a season to start that's taking longer than normal. What really killed me was the first week in December my two favorite teams (Columbus and Carolina) were coming through STL on back to back nights (about a 3 hour drive from here), and I was ready to make a "weekend" out of it. Other than that, they're only hurting themselves, and I can live with that, I suppose.

I miss the NHL too. I am one of those people that sports radio affectionately calls "strange Americans" because I enjoy watching soccer and hockey on TV. Call me crazy.
I echo TG1996 because I was in Banff, AB, near Calgary for my honeymoon in December. When my wife and I planned the trip, the lockout had not occured yet (looming maybe) and she gave me the ok to get tickets to a Flames game. Oh man I couldn't believe it! How many times in my life would I be able to catch the Flames at the Saddledome? And then the lockout. Oh joy. At least I drove by the Saddledome to see it.
Bring back the NHL. It needs to be trimmed down by about 4 teams realistically. The NHL needs to concentrate once again on what made it popular by sticking to markets that may not be the biggest, but the best. I applaud the efforts of trying new markets and hoping to garner more fans. However, cities like Hartford and Quebec need teams again. It is ok to explore, but you gotta know where your roots are.

I agree that it really sucks not having BG hockey, but everyone who can, needs to go to the Storm game tomorrow night so that we can support former FALCON icers, Steve Brudzewski and Chris Pedota!!! AND WEAR YOUR ORANGE AND BROWN FALCON HOCKEY GEAR!!!!bacn3 wrote:No hockey sucks, and now that bg is done it sucks even more.
GOOD LUCK STEVE AND CHRIS!!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I don't miss the NHL as much as I thought I would. The league is frustrating to watch because of all the holding, clutching and grabbing they allow . I'm not suggesting they turn the game into the ice capades and make it a skating exhibition, but you have to give the guys with legitimate skills more room to operate.
In every other sport, the top guys are given more room to play (sneeze at Michael Jordan and they called a foul) the NHL actually lets medicore talent drag the superstars down by not calling games by the rule book.
