I used to go that deli back in the early 80's when my gf was at Miami. Still love going out to Hueston woods in the fall...haven't been there in the last few years though

No Bahamas Bowl this year. Sounds like something else will be in the works to replace it, but obviously impacts MAC schools.

Whatever it is, I hope more than ten non-athletic department/player families buy tickets to go support BG this time.

Wouldn’t have that issue if these bowls weren’t dumb geographically. I’m going to a bowl in Detroit or Indianapolis every time, but I’m not driving to Alabama between Christmas and New Year’s. I’m certain I’m not the only person who feels this way.JCFalcon08 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 4:07 pm Whatever it is, I hope more than ten non-athletic department/player families buy tickets to go support BG this time.

These bowls are for ESPN to fill broadcast time and bring in ad revenue, and obviously the lack of suitable venues to host anything of significance in the north during December is a huge problem for the MAC in general.mbenecke wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 4:24 pmWouldn’t have that issue if these bowls weren’t dumb geographically. If the Browns are gonna build a dome, the least they can do is put a “Hall of Fame” bowl there.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 4:28 pmThese bowls are for ESPN to fill broadcast time and bring in ad revenue, and obviously the lack of suitable venues to host anything of significance in the north during December is a huge problem for the MAC in general.mbenecke wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 4:24 pmWouldn’t have that issue if these bowls weren’t dumb geographically. Re: 2024-25 Offseason
Bowls have traditionally been in warm climates. I can’t imagine playing in or watching a game in sub-freezing temperatures. The location and start time of this year’s bowl was less than ideal, but the lack of buying power for BG doesn’t help them get into future bowls.mbenecke wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 9:59 pmIf the Browns are gonna build a dome, the least they can do is put a “Hall of Fame” bowl there.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 4:28 pmThese bowls are for ESPN to fill broadcast time and bring in ad revenue, and obviously the lack of suitable venues to host anything of significance in the north during December is a huge problem for the MAC in general.mbenecke wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 4:24 pmWouldn’t have that issue if these bowls weren’t dumb geographically. Re: 2024-25 Offseason
I definitely get it. I also miss when games used to mean something, too.
I’m simply saying these northern cities have domes now, so they can absolutely host some games. Would be much better for the MAC to have packed regional stadiums than to play in front of nobody on a Tuesday at 9:00pm EST in Alabama. The bowls in Detroit the past few years have been awesome with how many local fans actually showed up for it. Much better experience, in my opinion.

A judge has signed off on the House vs NCAA settlement. Colleges can now pay athletes directly...middlemen are no longer required.
Can collective bargaining be far behind?

Re: 2024-25 Offseason
I mean, realistically no. We don’t have $20.5M laying around to share with the athletes. We spent something like $32M on athletics last year in general to barely get by. Unless we’re somehow massively shifting our budget, it’s unrealistic.
However, I don’t think we have to spend the full amount. It’s just that not doing so will put us behind the rest of the country and make it really damn difficult to recruit against our peers who can potentially pay more. So, I would expect BG to do what they can but it will never be an even playing field.

Re: 2024-25 Offseason
So does that mean we can eventually look forward to work stoppages/season cancelled due to player strike situations? By individual team, by conference or across all of the big school division at the same time? So maybe they raid JUCO for scabs to cross the picket lines? Yeah, I get it - players want their piece of the pie and no one can blame them for that but college football has gotten ridiculous with the structural changes that have taken place. It's sad to see it wrecked knowing that it can never again be what it was.

Re: 2024-25 Offseason
Would need recognized unions for that to happen - probably something that is quite far off given the number of collegiate athletes at each university and determining who would qualify as a union member. All athletes? Only those being directly paid by their respective university? Is there a B1GPA, SECPA?Beaker wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 2:24 pmSo does that mean we can eventually look forward to work stoppages/season cancelled due to player strike situations? Bet your bottom dollar that "Olympic" sport athletes will most likely not see a dime from their schools. Football, men's basketball, and probably a small sliver to women's basketball. Also brings up Title IX questions. Will schools need to provide an equal amount of pay to women athletes as men? Seems likely the way the law is written.
The settlement really solves nothing, to me it actually over-corrects in the other direction. Scholarships will need to be done away with and athletes need to be given official contracts as university employees. Allow them to collectively bargain, figure out how all that looks.

Re: 2024-25 Offseason
IIRC..there's already some form of lawsuit out there trying to get athletes recognized as employees of the University...collective bargaining could be closer than you think.
What are the title 9 implications of this? Can you pay one group of athletes more than another?
Whatever the answers are...it's just one more factor that will make it more difficult for BGSU to compete

Re: 2024-25 Offseason
This discussion brought to mind the attempt by Northwestern football players to unionize some years back. I had to go look it up because I couldn't remember all the details but the summary of it was that some of the players, led by Kane Coulter, who was the teams best player, wanted to unionize and they got a favorable ruling from a regional NLRB saying that they were considered university employees and had a right to form a collective bargaining unit. The players held a secret vote as to whether or not to unionize and the results were kept confidential while the university appealed to the full NLRB. The full board failed to uphold the regional board's recommendation so the final outcome was that they were not granted the ability to form a union. Regardless of how the current situation plays out, it's certainly going to involve courts and lawyers aplenty.
