Bill would ban using student fees for college sports

If I read the 2023 budget correctly, student fees account for over half of all BGSU athletic revenue, at almost $13.6M a year. It would be almost impossible for us (or many schools) to continue to play sports at our current level if this passes.

The problem with that bill is all the schools with "SU" are state funded. It becomes a fairly simple argument of federal overreach. It could affect federal funding similar to what we've seen this year, but that's it.

I read where the ban on using student fees kicked in only when a school earns at least $50M annually in media rights which is basically the B1G and SEC plus some other big time programs. That would mean the ban won't apply to us.

It also calls for a one-time transfer rule.

I would hope so. Read somewhere that the NCAA is not approving a number of NIL deals that are sent to their clearing house. Still trying to maintain some level of control, I guess..

Deloitte having control over what packages do/don’t get approved is so funny. The NCAA has abdicated all responsibility in college athletics.

CSC is also saying that NIL collectives that are simply providing payments or benefits to athletes, rather then providing goods or services to the public doesn't satisfy the business purpose requirements for NIL deals.

Basically threatening that NIL collectives are not a valid business and their deals won't be approved.

Throw this log onto the fire...
Congress would need to pass legislation for any of this to become official. Hardly a surprise that Trump would be up to doing the NCAA's bidding.
