Promotions

For those of you in the know what ar ethe rules for or against promoting BG football at HS football games. It would seem wise to promote the team at said games because you are reaching an area market who can easily travel and an audience that is clearly interested in football. A schedule in the program and a halftime announcement of BG and Heisman hopeful QB Omar Jacobs host XXX tomorrow at XXX. Show your ticket stub from tonights game and get 3$ off addmission at the gate.

Would this violate a recruiting rule?

I'm really not sure. There may be some violation IF a prospective takes advantage of the $3 off ticket.

But that's a gray area and the NCAA just believes in black and white, right?

This is a good topic. What sort of promos should BG do to get more people into the stands?

High school kids cannot get any kind of promotion, discount, prize or anything that could be considered a "gift" from a university that they could potentially play for, if I remember right. I know that when I have asked the Athletic Department to donate game tickets (like for raffles or groups of kids), the first question they ask is if they are being given to high school students. You could always write to Sid Sink, the guy who does compliance and eligibility, and ask him to clarify this, though. Only speaking from my personal experience on the issue, which granted, isn't a whole lot. Not sure if this answers your question or not, though....again, my (very) limited experience.......

Are your serious???? My cousin is going to play basketball at Valpo next year. I took him to the MAC tournament and we got in a free because we donated 10 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese. Is he going to get in trouble because he donated food to get a free ticket. I sure hope not.

Nope...the MAC letting you in for free is different than a school letting you in for free...I think.

on edit...I don't hink it would be a problem anyway because you provided consideration for the ticket (food for the poor) .

How would this be any different than when they bring recruits in, take them to the game for free, give them lunch and cart them around campus for a day? I guess maybe if you're only allowed ONE of those, but say a kid from a NW Ohio HS grows up a BG fan, KNOWS he's going to go to school here, is looked at by the coaches enough to possibly get a scholarship, but maybe not, and wants to see a game for $3 instead of $10? Certainly there must be a bylaw that states "they can't see a game for more than an XX% discount" or "$XX off face value"... Or maybe they just have to make the cheap tickets available through some kind of canned food drive to make it legit.

Whoever said about the gray area is right.

I don't really know the rules, but I was always under the impression that they weren't allowed special deals that weren't available to non-recruits. Otherwise it would be illegal for them to use a 2-for-1 coupon that they got. Or partake in the Pepsi Can promotion, etc.

I really think that if you're offering discounts to all HS students, then the athletes would be able to use them as well, if they chose.

Here is a promotion for you....

Falcons Mentoring Bobcats... get players from the Falcons paired up with the highschool players to talk about the game and have them come out with the BGHS crowds for the weekend games.

actually yeah it would be, giving any kind of special treatment to hs athlete's is a big no. Not sure about if it was to "random" hs students though.

Did I read this right, Football players mentoring High school students in actual scholarly work. Don't get me wrong, I know we have some smart players, but something about that seems like an oxymoron to me.
