vs. Lake Superior State (1/16-17)

Post by mbenecke »

Following the weekend sweep at Ferris State, our Falcons (11-5-4) will be at home once again this upcoming weekend, hosting the Lake Superior State Lakers (8-13-1) in league play. BOTH games this weekend will begin at 7:07pm - Saturday night’s game is an hour later than the typical home Saturday start because of home basketball in the afternoon. Both games available to stream, as always, on Midco.

We swept this team in their barn back in October, 4-1 and 3-2 for our first wins of the season.

Team Stats Comparison (CCHA rank):
Goals Per Game: BG - 3.40 (2nd), LSSU - 2.59 (7th)
Goals Allowed Per Game: BG - 2.70 (4th), LSSU - 3.00 (6th)
Shots on Goal Per Game: BG - 32.15 (2nd), LSSU - 26.68 (7th)
Powerplay: BG - .231 (3rd), LSSU - .200 (4th)
Penalty Kill: BG - .844 (3rd), LSSU - .747 (8th)
Faceoffs: BG - .541 (1st), LSSU - .494 (4th)

They’re a strong face-off team, and while their offense isn’t great, their powerplay is still in the top half of the league. We can’t afford to give them opportunities there. However, with their PK being pretty weak, we also need to force the issue when we have a powerplay look, as there will be chances for us to capitalize there.

The schedule after this gets much tougher in league play. We still play all of the other teams in the top 6 in the CCHA standings from this point forward, so it’s imperative that we take our best shot to stack points against a “weaker” CCHA team while we still can. This team is playing some pretty good hockey in the 2nd half, now it’s time to hit the gas and run through the finish line. Cannot fall back into bad habits and have a slow winter like we have countless times in the past.

Go Falcons!

Two games we should be sweeping as well. At home. No time to let up. Given enough points up to lower level teams in the league already. Grab 6 and move on. Schedule will begin to toughen up and the some contenders will turn into pretenders by mid to late February. Conference should get two teams in the tournament, which two I have not idea. Hope we are one of them.

In this week's "what's the team up to" video on Xitter you can see Morneau is in workout clothes but without any splints or casts. Looks like it's unlikely he'll play this weekend but from a pure speculation point of view it may be more protocol related than upper/lower body.

1-0 on an Emerson goal 53 sec in. We dominated most of the play though a couple of miscues required Moore to come up big. On to the second.

Been an entertaining game to watch. Good flow and both goaltenders are playing well.

As I say that, Lakers tie it up.

2-1 BG. Pfoh scores on one Applebee wants back.

Hotson is hauled down on a breakaway with the goalie pulled and gets a goal for it.

Falcons win 3-1. That’s 4 in a row and another 3 points in CCHA play.

Really good effort and a fun game to watch. Amazing when the teams are allowed to play a bit. When was the last regular season game that BG wasn't called for any penalties?

Last I knew it was in the 80s (88 against NMU, maybe).

First one I remember seeing live. Also the first time I've ever seen an awarded goal live also.

I was slightly mistaken on the penalty free game. An old media guide (think it was 99-00) lists 11/24/1978 at Northern Michigan as the only game BGSU Hockey has played without any penalties called (both teams). That one did not list a game for only BG having no penalties.

Third and fourth lines played well and got some ice time in the third.

Korodiuk is out tonight for Simanovics. Looks like the only change.
