Just a few questions

Post by MiamiBando »

Here are a few from a new kid on the block(albeit at a different U, J Crew that is)

I was wondering why they put BG in the MAC West in the first place. Also, how long have BG and Miami been playing, and what is the series record. Do any of you all remember the games, when we were regular season foes, EVERY fall? Was it like many Miami rivalries, very volatile? Like the UT-BGSU, or Miami-UC? nothing compares to Miami-Nebraska(Oh)?

If there is any other pertinant information, feel free to tell me. Look at it this way, your enlightening the enemy, though the enemy of my enemy is my friend

We were put in the west because the MAC insisted on putting Central Florida in the East when they came in three years ago. Central Florida wanted to play Marshall every year.

Before then, Bowling Green had been in the east.

It's a mixed bag for us. I think we all prefer playing Ohio schools. But I will miss having the Toledo game be as meaningful as it can be. With us in the other division, not as much will be at stake.

Miami leads its series with Bowling Green, but no need to dwell on that here.

It's a fine series though -- a very good rivalry.

From the mid-50s through the mid-60s, virtually every MAC title came down to Miami-Bowling Green.

Later, we couldn't buy a win from about 1973-84. That unlucky streak became known as the Miami Whammy.

Old timers will tell you that one of the greatest games in Bowling Green history was a monumental come back win against Miami in 1985.

In the 1950's, the rivalry was THE game, it seems. A lot of close games, and alot of seasons ruined one way or the other by that game. They seemed to be the one school that always had BG's number, especially during the Doyt Perry years. (I focused on it a bit in my Perry bio at http://www.bgsusports.com/football/doytperry.shtml ) Others here can tell you about the 1985 game, which might have been one of the top 5 or 10 wins in BG history. (And definitely top 5 in terms of excitement, I'd think.)

As for the move to the West, I don't know the reasoning, but looking at the alignment, SOMEONE had to move to the West, and the "border schools" would have been BG and Miami. Creating a divisional rivalry out of an already intense rivalry between BG and UT made sense, and would let Miami keep their rivalry with OU, as well as give Marshall someone to play. That and BG was closer to the "northern schools" that seemed to make up the West.

I'd rank the 85 BG-Miami tilt as the most exciting BG game I attended. The Kentucky game from that same year was a thriller, too.

Think about that one.... The Coach was the WORST in Miami's LONG history. You have to go back to 1914 to find a coach with a worse record than him. 1914! I'm sorry that deserves a no name. Those were the dark years..... the they saw the light. Fired him. Got someone new, and Miami CAME BACK. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes.... now he is DC at UT. Well, good luck to him. and they can have him. Miami was NEVER bad on defense when he was HC, just had ALOT of trouble on offense. A LOT OF TROUBLE.

I couldn't help it. Just finished the first book...re-reading them all in anticipation of the new one coming out this summer. Of course I've already read the first 4 at least 3-4 times, but this will be only the second time completely through all 5 :)

As for the (OH) thing, sorry man. Should've known those JCrewU guys would be riled up to see the (OH). I talk quite a bit on NFL message boards as well, and if you don't specify the (OH) it isn't always clear which you're talking about. My bad!
