Incorrect Link?

Post by CapitalFalcon »

I have notices that when I am on a board (lets take the Football board for example) and the menu at the top read: "Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba.com > Forum Index > Football" If I click on "Football" instead of refreshing the page, it dumps you back out onto the forum index. I think that is across all boards. Didn't know if it was suppossed to do that. Once again, AWESOME SITE!

I think 99% of the navigation problems I'm hearing about (and only from one or two people) are caused by some type of security setting in Internet Explorer. Personally, I don't USE Internet Explorer, so I'm not going to be much help. :-( You might try adding www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com as a "trusted site" in your internet settings...or you might try a faster, slicker browser that doesn't have a ton of security holes inherent in its use like Mozilla Firefox. :-)

I know what he's talking about.

If you're browsing the contents of, say, the football forum, all the links at the top will take you back to the forum index, because the next page in the heirarchy IS the forum index.

I know the links are a little deceiving, but that's because some people set their forum up with more levels than just Forum Index - Specific Subforum - Topic. (usually it's something like Forum Index - Forum Group - Specific Subforum - Topic)

Now, if you were viewing a TOPIC and you clicked the "Football" link, it should take you back to the index of the football subforum.

Make sense?

Please explain for those of us who are quite clueless here!!

Falconz: Please explain the difference between when you click on "Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba.com" and "Forum Index." They both take you back to the main list, don't they? And I still have to login each time I visit....is this a cookie problem on my computer?

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

There is no difference between those two links, as they are the same thing.

The reason for this is: If Grant had wanted to group each category of subforums "BGSU Sports", "The University and the City", "Administration" etc., and if you were in a specific subforum (such as Football), then by clicking the Forum Index it would take you to that GROUP of subforums titled "BGSU Sports" which includes: "Football", "Hoops", "Hockey", so forth and so on.

However, I feel it's unnecessary to use such groupings (why would you want to only view the BGSU sports forum index instead of the index that contains all of the subforums?) and Grant apparently agrees, and therefore the forum is not set up that way.

I don't know the exact reason why the forum software even displays both "ay-ziggy-zoomba.com" and "forum index" that are essentially the same link, but I'm sure it has something to do with that.

Now, as for your login problems. There should be a little check box underneath the field where you type your name and password that says something about keeping you logged on or to remember who you are the next time you come back (I can't remember what it says exactly as I'm doing it from memory) if you check the box.

Make sure you check that box. :)

What that does is leave a cookie. If that still doesn't work, check your cookie settings in Internet Explorer by opening Internet Explorer and going to "Tools" - "Internet Options" - "Privacy" tab. Check the settings to make sure it's set to "Medium". If that doesn't work, click the "Edit" button to see if you're blocking specific websites.

Hope that was of some help.

I have checked that little box EVERY time, but I still have to login each time. I also check the cookie settings and everything is as you say it should be....hmmmm......not sure what the problem is. I will have BGFan check out my computer when he gets back. (He's in Toronto, right now) Thanks for your help, I am sure we will get this figured out...eventually!!!

But, regardless of MY problems....THIS SITE ROCKS!!!!!

I increased the "life" of the cookie from its default setting of 3600 seconds to the max allowed of 99999 seconds. That should help with some of the issues I think, if they were caused by cookie expiration.

I'm really not seeing any of these problems first-hand though...so I'm not sure there's much more server-side tweaking I could or should do.

We'll get you straightened out though!

How about putting the links at the bottom of the page as well. I know there is a Jump-To drop down, but I keep scrolling back to the top to use the links. :?
