Incident at UT will not go away

Post by Warthog »

John Harris has another editorial about the incident involving the UT football team and some other students. This story was also the lead on the Ch. 11 News at 11 last night. Seems the mother's of the two boys that were injured were in town yesterday and wanted some more answers. They think that there were more than two football players involved. But that the police and Amstutz have turned thier back on disciplining some of them since they are starters. Amstutz says he is only suspending those that are charged with a crime. I think that is crazy. There was obviously more than two players involved. While some of the others may not have actually thrown punches or anything, just by showing up , they were trying to intimidate the other students. And I am sure they were egging on the ones that actually threw the punches (C'mon, kick his a$$, Don't take that sh!t from him, ... that sort of thing) That mob mentallity lead to things being worse than they should have. There are more guilty players then the two we have seen. (FYI, the jacka$$ that started it all was groping girls and then asked to leave because of that. Sure doesn't sound like those kids were asking to get beat up to me.)

I am shocked that someone would suggest that coach Doughnut gives any consideration to the depth chart when disciplining his players...

Dear Turd Harris:

Do you NOW see why UT isn't the lush holy land you and everyone else thinks it is? C-USA can have them, they'd fit right in.

(Though I will give Flabby Amstutz credit for not breaking out the "boys will be boys" line you might find at Marshall. At least not yet.)

"Incident at UT will not go away"

Nor should it. The longer this stays in or near the spotlight, the tougher it will become for the school to allow inaction.

You don't have to break the law to be suspended from the football team, Tom.

I dont think any of you on here would be happy unless every starter on Toledo's roster was suspended. Not everyone can have squeaky clean program like BG(right Mr. Lieninger, Mr Carson). Lately, I have seen players from BG getting suspended for off the field incidents, good for you them, but you honest people on here know that wasn't always the way things were handled *cough (Urban Meyer). Lets also recognize the fact that very few incidents in BG ever make the paper.

After Minnesota, maybe you should think that way too

And anyway, its not EVERY starter on the roster, just the ones that throw kids through windows and such. And as far as I know, every player involved in an "off the field" incident (with the exception of Carson, YET) has been suspended for a time. The way it should be.

likely because there are very few incidents that do, in fact, occur. and none of these incidents involve over one fifth of the football team being engaged in a battle royale.

First off, comparing Leininger (underage drinking) and Carson (expired license) to beating overmatched, much smaller kids to a pulp because they didn't like the idiot grouping females is pretty stupid. Two isolated players with minor offenses vs, what, 10 to 15, maybe even 20 players nearly killing another student. Not comparable.

Second, if you have evidence of incidents at BG that are not being reported, please share with us. Maybe there is nothng to report?

Yes, all the incidents that happen here on an apparent daily basis are just lost in the wake of all the other world shattering news here in BG. You are forgetting that things like that are a big deal in Bowlign Green and the community. The smallest thing gets put in the Sentinel tribune, not overlooked as you claim.

But we arent saying we want your team in jail, sure we'd all have a good laugh, but every fan would say that about at least 1 other team. plus, we at least want it to be a challenge when you go down at the glass bowl.

The point I think that is being made is this: Matt got busted, he was suspended immediatly, before he was taken to court and all that hooha. Conversly, Tom knows damn well that there were other members involved in that fight. And if you read about the condition of the young men that were victims, it doesnt matter if they are convicted or charged, that is uncalled for and deserves punishment. Punishment, not meaning jail and jail only, but something at the very least.

One boy almost lost his life, your, and mine I'll remind you, schoolmate. When a turnicate is used, that is the most drastic first aid that can be used. Save a life, lose a limb. thats the saying used with a turnicate, it didnt sound liek this was true in this case, but that is besides the point. It was a terrible thing to happen, and I wish it on no one, but when things such as this happen, action needs to be taken. What does this teach the rest of the team now? that if they are a starter, that they are above the laws and regulations of other students/players/people??? Thats not a good message to put out there. This is not just an issue with the team and the coach, this reflects on the school as a whole, and to be honest, i dotn want this to be something that people think of when they think of our school. I will have a degree from this institute, and would prefer it to not be tainted by the lack of discipline of a coach/school that was more concerned with winning football games, than the image it was projecting to the community.

TJ,

Welcome back. Not all of us would be happy, we want it to be a game. What we don't want, whether it's BG, UT, Marshall, or any other MAC school, is to play a bunch of thugs. I've read the comments on your board about the Marshall program.

All incidents get printed in the local Sentinel-Tribune. Our paper prints a daily police blotter. We get to see who was cited for Disorderly Conduct (Public Urination) as well as letting the dogs run loose with no tags. The entire gambit is published in the Cornfield Gazette.

In addition, the student newspaper prints the police blotter as well. So the names of any students cited for any offense is published twice.

I find it amazing that coach Doughnut is so willing to shrug off an incident that saw a numbers of his players coming within a hair of being accessories to a homocide.

It seems that the football coach hasn't been entirely forthcoming with the University adminstration re the details of the police investigation. Has Doughnut given the police the impression that he is the sole contact for the University on this matter? Has Doughnut actively stonewalled the University and their own internal investigation?

Enquiring minds want to know.....

So what was it? 10, 15, maybe 20? You sound like you were there. Why havent you contacted the TPD? Maybe because you werent there, neither was Harris. The police did there job, but thats still not enough for any of you.

Did Sahm and Suisham start the 2001 campaign? Also from what I read in the paper with regards to Carson the reason that was in the Blade was because he threatened to shoot a cop because she told him to turn down his radio.
