The trib says Gregory has declined to be interviewed. But, also mentions Rick Majerus, Steve Lavin, Tim O'Shea, Steve Hawkins, and DD. I will still be surprised if DD lasts through this and gets the job.

My O' My, how much has changed in a week since I've been around!
Anyway, here are a few reasons that Dan Dakich COULD be going to Chicago and the least of which has nothing to do with any opinions, good or bad, that I have of him.
It all comes down to money, folks. It's the engine that drives major college sports.
Whatever buyout Dan does have on his contract can easily be handled by Depaul who received an estimated $3M for Dave Leitao from the University of Virginia.
That being said, do you ever think that despite his bedroom view overlooking the golf course Dan doesn't have sleepless nights about turning down a GUARANTEED $2.5M to come back here and witness a mass exodus and two winning seasons?
DePaul is moving to a 16-team Big East next year. His hiring will bring some fanfare for those columnists that want to talk about how he has ties to Bobby Knight and the great job he did making 18 yr. kids aware where Bowling Green, OH is because as we all know . . . No one even in Ohio knows where Bowling Green is if you read the newspapers!
Here's the deal, Rick Majerus . . . Yeah that makes sense since he had a job for what 5 days earlier this year, only to back out for health reasons, I would feel really comfortable if I was in the DePaul version of the "Falcon Club" hiring him . . . Steve Lavin, a guy who had the keys to the greatest college basketball job in the world handed to him and he cheated. His name always comes up, but is rarely ever considered or interviewed.
Brian Gregory and Steve Hawkins have things about as well as they could at their institutions and here's something that Dan has on both . . . about 6 or 7 more years EXPERIENCE. Plus, despite that, Dan still comes in at a cheaper price.
Dana Altman fell on his clipboard the last time he ventured into the major conferences at Kansas State and his low-key approach is much more suited for Creighton.
Basically, I would not be surprised in the slightest bit if Dan ends up at DePaul and believe it or not, VanderMeer does too. Afterall, the parents have made no mention of not liking Dan, they just didn't like the drive and wanted their boy closer to home. DePaul is just as close as UIC and he plays a lot better competition!

Here's an interesting (and quite possibly very sticky) scenario:
When a player wishes to transfer (in this case Vandermeer), they only "grant him release from his scholarship", right? And presumably, he's finishing up the semester at BG. What if when Dakich talked to Vandermeer, he said "I think I have the inside track to coach at DePaul, and I'd like you there with me, look how close it is to your home, and your dad won't have to drive as far." Then Dakich DOESN'T get the job, what kind of red flags would come up if Vandermeer suddenly is reissued a scholarship at BG, or is that even allowed? To be given a scholarship after you've already been granted a release? I guess players have followed coaches around before, but it seems like it could be potentially fishy this time, especially if Dakich stays and Vandermeer has a change of heart.

Whew! And I thought that I was a hardcore conspiracy theorist! This stuff IS fun to think about, though.
DD's star has faded. He just hasn't accomplished enough during his time at BG to be a candidate for DePaul. Hawkins is a better candidate. Nationally, there have to be 20 guys ahead of DD. I don't buy it. DD will be at BG until he retire or we fire him.

*laugh* but I'm really not!BleedOrange wrote: Whew! And I thought that I was a hardcore conspiracy theorist! This stuff IS fun to think about, though.
I actually thought about it as I submitted it, that it might be a little over the top, but it was something to think about. We get fed this story about Vandermeer wanting to play closer to home, and Dakich mutually agreeing to let a 7-or so-footer go (6'10 or 6'11, at least, right?) so easily. It would just strike me as peculiar if he coached him next year, just not in brown and orange.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go resize my tin foil hat.

Dakich and Vandemeer
Allegedly Rick Neuheisel tried to coax some players from Colorado to Washington when he took the Washington coaching job a few years back and as a result the UW football program was put on probation and the NCAA wouldn't allow any of the Colorado players to enroll at Washington.
As much as I wonder about Dakich's stability I give him more credit than trying a bonehead move like that.
The word on the street has Vandermeer going to University of Illinois-Chicago.
