Very entertaining game for an absolutely beautiful spring day>
The Offense?? I think we'll average 48-50 a game this season....seriously. The younger wr's like Partridge and Alexander had me salivating...and Cory does remind you of Cole Magner. Guys like Lett, Jones and Brantley played well too. We all know Sharon and Sanders are gonna light it up Our running game looks like a powerball ready to roll. The most pleasant surpise I saw was both O lines looked great, for the most part. We are gonna be stockpiled at O line for the next five years. And Anthony Turner??? SHHHHHHHHHHEEEEET! That boy can throw a spiral! I was VERY impressed him Turner. If, God forbid, something happened to Omar, I would be comfortable with Turner.
I loved seeing all the deep balls thrown!
The defense....like many have already said, it is difficult to judge how this d will turn out. I love the size of our LB's. I am concerned about the secondary. Is it that our WR's are so stinking good or do we really need help back there? Our D line should be fine with Cooley, Parks, Thaler and Williams. I talked to Coach Beck for a few minutes after the game and one of the things I really like about Beck is his honesty. He didn't try to make excuses or sugar coat anything. He was legit with his thoughts. He said we definitely need the younger guys in the secondary to step up and has some concerns with the depth of the D line. With Mitch Crossley gone and Matt Leininger sitting out this season, we're thinner up front. But Beck did say he loves the young guys on the D line that will need to step up.
Special teams. Frye did ok...he is good for 40 yards a kick and consistent. Good to see Timchenko make every PAT and his FG. Some of his kickoffs were short but he gets nice hang time. Frye held on most of the place kicks. I wonder is Turner will get a shot at that when fall rolls around.
All in all, I simply cannot believe the athleticism of this team. Just 5 years ago, we had very little. But this team is loaded with skill. We need to get the D up to par and we should have a great 2005 season. It was very cool to chat with Daniel Sayles at the TG and also seeing Chad Long there at the game. I find it hard to believe that guys like Thaler, Warren, Piepkow, Sanders, Pope and Sharon are all SR's already. Time flies...
Nice to have DJ Durkin back home at the Doyt as well.
Great hanging with the TG crowd, as usual. Now, we only have to wait 5 slow, painstaking months for a home game.

The secondary.......
I could easily rip our secondardy and how many yards I think they will give up the deep bombs this year, but for a little positive thinking here, I give props to Dre Perry, he and Van Johnson showed something of a force that I could recognize at all. Perry put a big hit on somebody near the sideline once and Van Johnson showed good instincts and athleticzm intercepting Omar near the end. I don't really know how good Van is a corner yet , but I wouldn't mind seeing him start over Jordan just on what I saw of him at the Spring Game. Yeah, I know our offensive weapons do make it appear as if we have no corners even guarding. Lets hope our wr's are just that good.

Re: The secondary.......
I thought Perry was on football hiatus until he got his grades in order. He wasn't listed on the depth chart released earlier. Can anyone else confirm that Perry was playing Saturday? I have very high hopes for him and it doesn't hurt that he is one of Noah's favorite players (by virtue of wearing one of his favorite numbers).falconboy wrote:I could easily rip our secondardy and how many yards I think they will give up the deep bombs this year, but for a little positive thinking here, I give props to Dre Perry, he and Van Johnson showed something of a force that I could recognize at all. I think that's pretty big news. I know many people have criticized Perry for sometimes looking lost, but when I've seen him (and anyone who saw him featured in the highlight DVD this year), he's shown glimpses of being a big-play DB. I'm not saying he's a savior for what appears to be shaping up to be a shaky defensive backfield, but I think he could make a big difference.Flipper wrote:Yes, Deaudre Perry did play. We really do need him to be ready this fall.
Does anyone know if he is, in fact, going to play this fall?
I would have to believe that he's in good academic standing right now for the fall semester, or they would not have allowed him to participate Saturday.
I don't think he's all world, but I think he & Van Johnson combine to give us some athleticism there that we don't have without them. Anything to get our favorite whipping boy, J-squared, off the field more, I'm in favor of. I just don't think he's ever going to "get it" and become anything more than a nickel back at best.

Do you know where they had him slotted - SS, FS, CB?
I agree that Perry likely won't replace Martin Bayless in the pages of BG history, but he seems to have the instincts of a big-play DB, which is something we sorely need with Keon's departure. If Johnson is as good as advertised and Perry can find his way clear of his academic problems, we have the potential to upgrade our defensive backfield significantly - that doesn't mean we'll have a very good d-backfield, just that it will be much better than what we've been seeing.
