Looky at what I found....
"DRAFT DAY VALUE BOARD":
MIAMI, OH senior power forward DANNY HORACE is eyeing a possible change in professions, as he goes from low post threat to tight end prospect... while he averaged 15 points and nine rebounds, as a first-team All-MAC power forward... wide upper body, but athletic (not bulky) between the waist and lower body... he has impressive athleticism for his size... including 38" vertical and 11'0" broad jump... weighs 6056, 250 pounds... did not play in a regular season college football game, but worked with the team last spring... catching two passes for 16 yards in the team's spring game, while playing against the first-team defense... he wore jersey #83 for the WHITE team... this is also the only current available game film available on him... played two years of football in high school at Western Hills High School in Cincinnati... will turn 22 years old the day before the draft on April 22nd... has a private workout scheduled with Washington on April 19th (Tuesday)... a total of 12 teams have called and requested additional information and a copy of the spring game tape... #33 on the basketball team... #83 on the spring game tape... please contact his agent for more information and game film... a copy of that spring game tape is currenty en route to our own office, as well.

He's going to make the attempt to say Fitch should try football...

Man, I don't know if that would be a good idea. Fitch had to sit out a bunch of games when he gpt jarred in a post game celebration. What would happen when he gets hit by a 245 lb linebacker? He'd also have to gain some bulk and I don't think that'd help his knees either.
Smart move by Horace though. He's not likely to get any looks in the NBA and Antonio Gates success has opened some doors.

I'm sure he has the athleticism to play TE, but we'll see if he's got the right skillset & mentality beyond that. I wish him luck, but everyone needs to remember that Gates was a legit D1A prospect in football before he chose basketball. It's not like the guy just woke up one morning and said, I'll think I"ll try to play football. He had originally enrolled at MSU, I believe, to play football; before deciding later that he wanted to play hoops instead.
Gates spent time at four different schools. He was always more regarded as a football prospect than basketball (although highly regarded for both), but apparently enjoyed basketball more.
I don't remember all the details, but here's the cliff notes version of his path.
As a heavily recruited football prospect, he originally went to Michigan State on a football scholarship with intentions of also playing for the hoops team after football season. While being redshirted that true frosh year, the football staff at MSU decided they didn't want to let him try to play hoops too. Gates really wanted to play basketball, got upset and left the school after just one semester. Perhaps they did promise he could play basketball too to help recruit him, then turn turned things around on him after he arrived.
Next he winds up at Eastern Michigan where he started his college basketball career. I think he was effectively kicked off the team there, or at least it was one of those "mutal decisions" type of deals.
That took him to some kind of small school, maybe a juco, in California for a year before ending up at Kent State.
In the midst of all that bouncing around he was also supposed to end up at Fresno State at one point (I think they're the ones who had him go to the small school out that way), but obviously that fell through.
I too think he could have played in the NBA as well. He's one talented dude.

Boy Flip...I am surprised at your disdain for Corliss Williamson. Wasn't he a first team All-American in college? In addition, he won the Sixth Man of the Year award in the NBA for 2001-2002. He also was named the MOP in the NCAA tournament leading Arkansas to the 1994 NCAA title. Not too shabby in my book.Flipper wrote:Yes... I 'm pretty sure you're right about Gates and MSU. I think Gates could have played in the NBA. If Scoreless Williamson can play ten years in the league, Gates should have been good for a few.

Corliss is ok...he picked up that handle when George Zidek of UCLA punked him during the 1995 NCAA final.Redwingtom wrote:Boy Flip...I am surprised at your disdain for Corliss Williamson. He was not my favorite Piston during his stay in Detroit though. He had a little too much of that "Adrian Dantley pass it to me and I'm keeping it because I'm a black hole" in his game
Actually, it's spelled clairvoyant.Germainfitch1 wrote:Its nice to see that not only do we have BG's AD and Depaul's AD posting under one name here in BG Land but that, that person is also clarevoyant!BGDrew wrote:He's going to make the attempt to say Fitch should try football...
I just remember a few months ago after Fitch got busted for Weed you said how he should try to be a tight end, i.e. Gates.

BGdrew, doesn't know all, It was less than one month ago that the "could germain "my knee goes out in a strong wind" Fitch switch sports" thread appeared.BGDrew wrote:Actually, it's spelled clairvoyant.Germainfitch1 wrote:Its nice to see that not only do we have BG's AD and Depaul's AD posting under one name here in BG Land but that, that person is also clarevoyant!BGDrew wrote:He's going to make the attempt to say Fitch should try football...

Duly noted. Didn't really feel like searching for the thread. Either way, I don't see any BG player making the switch to the NFL. One every 5 years or so is quite a rarity.

If you mean one player in all of collge sports, that would be incorrect. Someone for the Pitt Panthers is doing also this year. For atleast the next few years the 6-5-6-7 Girthy PF types who wont make it in hte pros will atleast get looks. After all how much does it cost a team to check out a player on a pro day that you are already traveling to?
