Falcon NFL Draft Preview
I'd be shocked to see Goddard slip all the way till the 6th round. If he's still there in the 5th, I'd want Cleveland to take him. This year there are a LOT of teams moving to the 3-4, and in that defense these hybrid DE/OLB's are the true stars. I really think that Goddard could fit that bill to a tee. If there is a run on those types of guys (and I think there will be with so many teams making that switch), Goddard could go as high as the 4th round.
I just wasn't that impressed with him when we played him.

You're right a lot of teams are switching to the 3-4 and guys like Merriman, DeMarcus Ware, David Pollack, Dan Cody, Justin Tuck etc are all hot prospects now.hammb wrote:I'd be shocked to see Goddard slip all the way till the 6th round. I think the Browns will take Edwards with the 3rd pick and an OLB like Kevin Burnett or Daryl Blackstock with their 2nd round pick.
I am excited to see what the Eagles do this weekend. I am sure nobody else cares on this board but they have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds and 13 overall.
Goddard info from nfldraftcountdown.Flipper wrote:I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think Goddard was found to be suprisingly weak, slow or small (maybe all three) when tested. That would explain why he's being downgraded a bit.
Height-6-0 1/4
Weight-238
40 4.68
Strengths: Highly productive and one of the top sack artists in the country as a senior...Very athletic...Has good speed and a burst to close on the quarterback...Has a strong upper body...Very quick off the line...Instinctive.
Weaknesses: Vastly undersized, both in terms of height as well as weight...Will be a liability against the run...Will likely only be a situational pass rusher in the pro ranks.
Notes: Really put himself on the map with an outstanding senior campaign...Won't be a high draft pick but the NFL is always looking for pass rushers which will get him more than a look...Could project to OLB in the NFL, especially in a 3-4 defensive scheme
See, that's the thing, he IS undersized as a DE, but 238 is fine for an OLB. Although he is pretty short. The guy has a fantastic motor and doesn't give up.
Actually I was VERY impressed with him in the BG game. Sometimes I think you can tell more from a DE on games when they're getting killed than otherwise. Our OL handled him, time & time again. He just couldn't get through our OL. Even still, the guy never gave up and was still giving his all even when they were getting whipped. That's a good thing to see in a pass rusher; they're going to get dominated a lot over the course of a game/season. Those that will still give 100% waiting for the OL to screw up are the ones that can be really good.
He's not the next LT, but I think you'd be getting a darn fine pass rushing OLB in the 5th round...that's good draft value, IMO.
Of course if I were running a 4-3 I wouldn't really want anything to do with him. He's too small for DE, and probably not athletic enough for a 4-3 OLB.

From Scout.com's premium section:
Jonathan Goddard School: Marshall
Ht: 6-0.5 Wt: 238 40: 4.74 Year: 5Sr
Bio: All-Conference selection as a senior after posting 78/16/28. Moved into the starting lineup prior to his sophomore campaign.
Positives: Explosive collegiate defensive end who projects to outside linebacker in the NFL. Plays low with leverage, bends his knees and immediately alters his angle of attack. Fast off the edge, plays with great balance and tough to knock off his feet. Can flatten, pursue from the backside and catch ball carriers. Plays with a good degree of suddenness and possesses a burst of speed. Solid job reading the action and does more than just rush the quarterback.
Negatives: Undersized, engulfed at the point or easily locked up in blocks out of a three point stance. Rarely asked to make plays in reverse.
Analysis: A defender tough to stop, Goddard must now become accustomed to making plays in space. Possesses marginal size for weak-side linebacker, although his speed and ability to flow to the action quickly are best suited in a 34 defense.
He is listed as the #8 OLB in the draft.

My roommate's brother is coming over Saturday and he's a HUGE Eagles fan...of course they get to watch the draft1987alum wrote:Don't be so sure.kslates wrote:I am excited to see what the Eagles do this weekend. Has he been a huge Eagles fan for a long time or just the last couple of years?
Nothing ticks me off more than these bandwagon Eagles fans. Not saying he is one just wondering. A lot of people say stuff to me when I wear my Eagles gear, but I have liked them ever since I was about 6. I fell in love when they had Randall Cunningham. He was so fun to watch.
87-any word on what the Eagles are going to do?
There is no consensus on the Eagles MB about what they are going to do Saturday.

Our draft guru feels very strongly that the Eagles will move up - maybe even twice - in the first round. Don't be surprised if the Eagles pull of a stunner and go very high to get Braylon Edwards or Ronnie Brown.kslates wrote:Has he been a huge Eagles fan for a long time or just the last couple of years?

Other first-day names to keep an eye on = Blaystock, Roddy White, Matt Jones, Barrett Rudd, Oshimogho Atogwe, C.J. Mosley.
Also, don't be surprised if the Eagles draft a QB this year - someone they can groom for a few years. You can determine a lot about how the Eagles will draft by looking at actuary tables.
History shows that they will move up, Reid loves to wheel and deal. Jones is an interesting prospect. Hopefully they can get him with their second round pick and not their first.1987alum wrote:Our draft guru feels very strongly that the Eagles will move up - maybe even twice - in the first round. I would love to see them pick a WR in the first round just in case the TO situation gets out of hand.
The latest article I read had them taking Adrian McPherson formerly of Florida State and then trade him in a few years like they did with AJ Feeley.
Thanks for the info!
He's been an Eagles fan for as long as I've known him (about 15 years). He was a huge Cunningham fan, and has stuck with the Eagles ever since. The kid loves everything Philadelphia for some reason.kslates wrote:Has he been a huge Eagles fan for a long time or just the last couple of years?

Hell, last weekend he drove to Philly for an Arena football game! Methinks he just wanted a cheesesteak.
Speaking of which, that'd make quite the addition to a tailgate sometime '87
That is cool, the only bad thing about being an Eagles fan is that the Clowns and Lions are on all the time. But Sunday Ticket is a wonderful thing!!hammb wrote:He's been an Eagles fan for as long as I've known him (about 15 years). He was a huge Cunningham fan, and has stuck with the Eagles ever since.
