Cincinnati Moeller guy Ryan Childress gets release from UWM
6-8/230 lb. Ryan Childress that BG was once in on and mentioned by several recruiting sites has received a release from his LOI from UW-Milwaukee following Bruce Pearl going to Tennessee and Rob Jeter being hired as head coach. He's a definite power forward, but I think it would be stretch to ask him to play center.

Given our current needs, he's seems to be an excellent use of our remaining scholarship. Thanks for the news. You recently posted that you saw him play in the state tourney. What did you think?OptionQB wrote:6-8/230 lb. If Childress is trying to avoid coaching uncertainty, then all of this DD/DePaul talk (which I happen to think is absurd anyway), won't help our chances of getting him.
By the way, coach Stone was recently up in Michigan scouting 6-8 twins Phil & Charles Tabet of the 2006 class. On service ranks them as #16 & #20 in MI's class of 2006.

Honestly, you can tell the kid has a tremendous motor and is very agressive. It was the third game between GCL rivals Xavier and Moeller and I think Xavier just knew which buttons of his to press b/c he had 3 fouls before half and picked up a fourth sometime in the third quarter. I think he finished with 8 and a bunch of boards. He seems very emotional when he plays and has "ready-now" type of build with solid quickness. He was much more impressive in foul trouble than was Miami recruit Tyler Dierkers was, who was not in foul trouble.

I just googled Childress and liked what I saw. From what I can tell, the MAC was all over him and had gobs of offers, but not from BG (wonder why). One does get the impression that he has tendency to get into foul trouble. He served a 2 game suspension for drawing a pair of technicals in a game. So, he's tough, emotional, foul-prone, strong, not slow, and can score from inside and out. I hope we are on this kid.OptionQB wrote:Honestly, you can tell the kid has a tremendous motor and is very agressive. Childress's teammate Dierkers signed with Miami, but Miami has no remaining scholarships to offer. That's one less good program to compete with. At this late point in the recruiting cycle, the array of schools with need and availability for Childress is more narrow, which is something in our favor. He might be opening up his recruiting, or he might have already identified his next school when he requested his release. Did the Insiders article mention anything about his intentions?

I have not been impressed by Childress. He's a banger who is either going to play the 4 or be an undersized center. I don't think he has much of an upside as a D1 player other than as a role player. IMO we'd be better off not using that scholarship rather than signing him. He had 6 points and 5 boards in Moeller's state semi-final game.
On another note, 6'8" Kyle Gillette from Loudonville who was previously mentioned on this site is headed to Northern Kentucky (D2). It appears NKU wants to go D1 in the next 2-3 years. The state of Kentucky is providing NKU with $50+ million to build a 10,000 seat arena according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Like I said, he was in foul trouble the entire semifinal game and I think that Xavier knew which buttons to push to expose him to that situation. He is a very emotional player with a high motor. I didn't come away overly impressed b/c of his stat line, but rather by the enthusiasm and heart he brings. I don't think the upside is high on him, but I think he's a great competitor from a tremendous program and right now all we have on the block is a bunch of coverted 3's and a guy with less floor time minutes than Dan's sportcoats.
