Memphis QB Danny Wimprine heading in your direction..

Post by HornLakeTiger »

Danny was signed yesterday as a FA by the Cleveland Browns. With only Trent Dilfer and Charlie Frye as the other QB's in camp, I would say he has a VERY good chance of making the team.

I know there are some Browns fans around here. You guys cheer for Danny up there. He was the greatest QB in our history, and goodness knows how much we're going to miss him down here in Memphis.

Take care and best of luck in '05!!!

you're forgetting our ex-QB already on the browns' roster, josh harris. with all due respect, i think we'll be rooting for him to make the browns over wimprine.

i'll root for danny to show enough to latch on with another team after camp or to make the practice squad as the 4th QB, but naturally, my allegiances lie with harris.

wimprine has an uphill battle as the browns traded QB luke mccown who was the fourth round draft pick of the team in 2004 in favor of harris. also, GM phil savage was in baltimore in 2004 when they drafted harris in the 6th round.

but good luck to you guys in 2005. you've got a 2006 first round pick over there in williams.

I don't know much about Wimprine, but I do remember that he was very big for a QB. If he has the hands he could be a very versitile TE at the pro-level.

And with all due respect to him and the Tigers (a team that I possess a great deal of affection for after the bowl experience), I don't think he has the arm strength/accuracy to be an NFL QB. And Harris certainly had him beat in those categories before he turned pro (and he now has had 6 months in the Browns system (and impressed the club enough for them to trad a 1 yr. old 4th rnd. draft pick)), so I don't see him competing for the 3-deep roster at QB. He did have some good speed, though, so I think he could pull a Josh Cribbs and move to another position and find a great deal of success. I wish him nothing but the best!

Good to see you again, too, HornLake!

Actually, Wimprine isn't big at all, especially for a quarterback. Draft reports have him listed at 6'0", 225 pounds. For what it's worth, he was also timed at 4.96 in the 40...by no means a "fast" time. All of this said, I truly expect Wimprine to be nothing more than a practice squad quarterback. At the very most, he can hope to use his stocky frame to earn time on special teams. I truly respect everything Wimprine did at Memphis, and give him his dues for being the "greatest QB" in Tiger history, but at the next level, I have to believe Danny's roles will be limited. :?

Wimprine...that isn't a name for a QB. Too easy to call him "Wimpy".
It's 3rd and long, you're down by six with 1:30 to go in the game. In that situation, do you want to hang your hat on a guy people call "Wimpy"?

Yeah, Danny will have his hands full in Cleveland. But if he could latch on as the practice squad QB for a few years, he might be able to make a career for himself. Given the way Cleveland went through QBs last year, anything is possible!

Looking forward to a BG-Memphis rematch - maybe the 2005 Liberty Bowl?

Hey, that could honestly happen...lol. All that the Liberty Bowl knows for 2005 is that one team will be from Conference USA. They don't have a clue who the other team will be....so a Bowling Green-Memphis matchup could happen, who knows....?

Hopefully by then, Noah's Streak will be broken, so we would at least have a shot at figuring out Omar Jacobs.

Ought oh!!!!!

Somebody blasphemed about the streak...now the gloves are off...which is unfortunate because I remember HLT being on the board around the Bowl game time...and he and virtually everyone we met in Mobile from memphis showed good sportsmanship.

But like I said the gloves are off (hockey analogy, we play that up here) what was Wimprine better at miscounting guys on the field twice after a timeout, or that "no - pass, fumble thing he had going on in the 3rd Q?"
