Yeah, with those brickwall defenses at Kent, EMU, Buffalo.... :?

The only thing that really concerns me alot with this is the timing. Getting a top notch DC this late in the process is going to be a very difficult task.
Just as Tressell was able to poach a good coach from us, I am certain there is some young, hungry coach that would kill to be the defensive coordinator where the offense is going to put up 50 each and every week.

Good luck to Coach Beckman. :goodman:

But I think we will do just fine without him. :drinkers:

The question is, will BG hire the new DC from within?

I'll place an early bet on John Bowers. He has coached the def ends, LB's, and not this year is scheduled to coach the DB's. Looks like he knows his way around the defense. I think he gets a shot at the coordinator now.

WOW! I cannot say I'm sad to see him go, and my main reasoning is that I don't think his "style" fits BG.

He wants quick small DL who can penetrate and make plays. Unfortunately, we have trouble recruiting that sort of athlete. What we end up with are small guys who don't have enough quickness to make up for their lack of bulk against good OL.

At OSU and other major colleges you can get DE's who are only 250, but run like a WR. That sort of athlete can allow you to play with an undersized DL. We cannot recruit that sort of athlete at BG. Our lack of size on the DL proliferated to problems every where else. Our pass rush was so-so, except for a few standouts, thus our DBs got toasted. Our DL got flattened and made our LBs look worse in the running game.

I'm sure he's a great guy, and he's a fiery coach, I know that. I just don't like his overall philosophy for BG. Simiilar to how people preach that it is impossible to build a power running offense at a MAC school, I think its impossible to build a super athletic DL. I think any college coach will tell you that its those athletic DL that are the hardest to find among the HS ranks.

Yes.

Tim Beckman seems like a good guy.

As far as the defenses -- they could be better, but I'm not ready to lay it on Beckman. There have been some meltdowns, but there have also been some fine moments -- the Western Michigan shutout, the tough, tough play against Purdue and Ohio State.

Beckman may be getting a ton out of what he has to work with -- and if he doesn't have a lot to work with, that isn't all on him.

This is my question:

I wonder how much he stands to earn at Ohio State. It may not be a lot more (going from a coordinator to something lower on the chain at OSU) -- and if not, is this a sign that maybe he is no longer sensing the possibility he is an heir apparent here?

It may seem impolite to bring that up, but it did cross my mind.

Tim Beckman is an excellent defensive coach. He is intense and demanding of his players. Statistically he was one of the best DC's in the MAC. The collapse at Toledo was a combination of factors (players missing assingments, failure of the offense to maintain possession, turnovers).the current style of play in the league require speed & stunts(which is what BG runs).

The defense is complex and requires the ability to make quick reads. As wide open as MAC offense's are there are not many "styles" of defense that will replace the current one and be sucessfull. Additonally, a new defense will not be installed prior to this season, regardless of who gets the job.

John Bowers is not the guy (although he may get the job). He is a good coach, but he was the DC at Kent when they were miserable. It wasn't all his fault, but he went from that to high school and then to BG. I'd look for an outside hire.

I thank Coach Beckman as he is one of the three major reasons BG football is where it is today, as compared to five years ago. He had opportunities to leave before, but this is right for him and his family. He will have great success at Ohio State and I hope he gets a National Championship Ring.

Go Falcons!! Go Bucks!!

I hope Coach Beckman has a lot of success down at OSU. I thought he did a good job here and didn't warrant nearly as much crtiticism as he got around these parts. But, I'm just some guy on the internet, so my judgement doesn't count for much.

Gary Blackney, Urban Meyer, Gregg Brandon and Jim Tressel all thought enough of Tim Beckman to have included him on their coaching staffs.
I think that says a lot about his abilities as a coach.

I would guess it is filled in house. Bowers would move up and Malone might just take the DBs job. I knpow its very early to have Malone do that but atleast we have someone in house who can.

At OSU they already signed there DC from in house. I dont remember what his name was but they also moved former buckeye Luke Fickel and assistant DC. I would guess that with Durkins experience at ND they are trying to fast track him but now is way too early to move him up.

What i like about our coaching staff is that they are adding guys with area ties.

Malone and Durkin former BG players and Kuhns a Bellevue product. If they hit with one and he proves to be a gem we could get atleast a few extra years out of them just because they are from the area.

Same with Coach Stud.

And one for each and every player, coach (well, except one or two  ), student, fan, and member of the community since 1959. Or at least a MAC Championship for everyone since 1992, when, in my freshman year, I thought MAC titles grew on trees.

I guess I can wish Coach Beckman luck, but the only thing I hope he gets in Columbus is his own personal NCAA investigator.

Who cares, so long as we do better on defense this year who recruits and calls the plays doesn't matter to me. That it is this late in the year, that is a problem. After spring football, I'd like to see somebody young, bright, and aggressive come in and shake things up a bit.

As far as how he did while he was here, isn't he a hold-over from Blackney? He did pretty well, debating how well he did is beyond any use at the moment.

Anyone who goes to the pukeyes is a trader. Thanks for your time, but I could care less if the pukes ever win another Championship.

I'm a Falcon and nothing else.

Just like the short term memory of a Defensive Back, let's put it behind us and look for the next person that will help the Falcons win.

I'd bet in-house. I can't see hiring a new DC and trying to install a new system before the season starts.
