No, but an outside d-coach could come in and work with our system. IMO, the turnaround in our program has come with outside guys, and we should seek out the best guy we can get.1987alum wrote:I'd bet in-house. o&b: could be ... but I think a new DC would want his own system. I'm with WH. Coach Beck was always one of my fave coaches but I think we can all agree our defense just hasn't been good enough the last 2 years. Best of luck to ya, Beck, and I hope ya tear it up in the Shoe.Warthog wrote:Just as Tressell was able to poach a good coach from us, I am certain there is some young, hungry coach that would kill to be the defensive coordinator where the offense is going to put up 50 each and every week.TG1996 wrote:Yeah, with those brickwall defenses at Kent, EMU, Buffalo....JoeFalcon wrote:On one hand, we were consistently in the top 1/3 of the conference in scoring defense, not an easy feat by any means.![]()
The only thing that really concerns me alot with this is the timing. Getting a top notch DC this late in the process is going to be a very difficult task.
Good luck to Coach Beckman.![]()
But I think we will do just fine without him.
What about Coach Ward? He's been here a decade, has coached the D line and been the strength and conditioning coach. He knows the system and the program. The players have a ton of respect for him but he's tough...and fair. Just a thought....
Or we could find a guy that will get his system to work. Timing sucks but that's the way it goes.
Also, I think when Coach Brandon takes his next job, Coach Stud could be the guy to run this engine for a long time.

I think Coaches Brandon and Beckman have both been concerned about our defense for a while and have been searching for ways to improve it.
Coach Brandon has publicly repeated that cliche about how defense wins championships. Also, I read somewhere where Brandon and Beckman recently visited the Virginia coach (Groh?) who they regard as one of the best coaches on defense, and sought out advice from him.
If you look at our last group of recruits, I think you can see an attempt to bring in more defensive players.
Think about it. If we could bring the quality of our defense up to anywhere near that of our offense, we would be one of the best teams in college football.

I think you're exactly right, Salsa. If we had the defense from 2001?? With this offense?? ROSE BOWL....Salsa wrote:I think Coaches Brandon and Beckman have both been concerned about our defense for a while and have been searching for ways to improve it.

he will be fine at OSU
our defense has always been undersized, slow, and the only decent secondary players we have had were patten and keon.
Linebackers have been decent. D-line really only plays well against NAIA quality teams like the directional michigans. They dont play well in the big games like toledo, or NIU.
I dont want to agree with it but i feel thats true

But, if he thought it was a good job, he could phase it in, put some parts in one year and make big changes in the second year.1987alum wrote:o&b: could be ... but I think a new DC would want his own system. I have not been pleased with our defensive performance over the past few seasons. But to say we've only had two decent secondary players over the past few years is an insult to some pretty good players. Carswell had hid shortcomings, but he was, at least, "decent."
Our d-line has come up short in some big games, but they did just fine against Marshall last year, not to mention a bowl win against a tough Memphis squad.
Let's keep the hyperbole out of these discussions, shall we?

Obviously, DECENT = NFL caliber player. What else could decent mean?
