Some good news for Harris?

Post by Warthog »

Here is a comment from Terry Pluto of the Akron Beacon-Journal in Sunday's edition:

"As for Frye, I just hope he doesn't have to play a lot this year -- unless he is so impressive in camp and exhibition games. Let him sit and learn -- and watch Trent Dilfer take the beating. Don't be surprised if Josh Harris gets a look. Savage drafted him in Baltimore a year ago."

Getting a look is the first step. Can't prove anything if you never get on the field. Good luck, Josh. :D

I thought Harris was a free-agent, not a draft pick?

The guy who drafted him in Baltimore now works for the Clowns...it's kind of a word puzzle. He was signed by the Browns as a free agent, yet a guy working for the Browns drafted him.

Harris' NFL timeline goes like this:

Drafted in the 6th Round by the Baltimore Ravens. Their personnel department consisted of Phil Savage & Ozzie Newsome.

Cut after training camp by the Ravens.

Placed on the Practice Squad by the Ravens (PS players can be picked up by any other team if they're going to be put onto the active roster).

Browns, after a rash of QB injuries are down to only Luke McCown so they sign Harris off Baltimore's practice squad.

Browns coaching staff & personnel dept. all fired.

Phil Savage hired to be the new GM of the Browns.

Browns cut Jeff Garcia, do not re-sign Kelly Holcomb, Trade for Trent Dilfer, Draft Charlie Frye, and Trade away Luke McCown.

That is how Josh ended up in Cleveland with the guy who originally scouted/drafted him. The current Cleveland depth chart is:

1. Trent Dilfer
2. Harris/Frye
3. Frye/Harris

It will be up to Josh to outplay Frye if he wants to be the backup. Frye obviously has the larger investment in him with a 3rd round draft choice, but I'm thinking that the current Browns coaching staff will play whoever is performing.

Harris WILL out play Frye and be the back up. I see Dilfer getting hurt and Harris becoming the starter about 4 games in to the season.

Yea, but the question is, HOW does he get hurt. Because of the lack of an O-line, or something else? Cuz if its lack of O-line, I sure don't want Josh in the kind of situation where its pretty much just asking for him to get hurt because of the lack of an O-line. OTOH, if Josh gets a chance to play because Dilfer is not cutting it, I'm all for it. I want Josh to get his spot because he EARNED it, not because he's the only other choice.

beggars can't be choosers -- Josh will be lucky to get a shot no matter how he gets it and for his sake I hope he performs if and when he does get that shot. That's all a sixth round draft pick can hope for. If bledsoe didn't get hurt, and Tom brady hadn't been the only other choice, he'd still be a backup somewhere.

Roethlisberger got his shot in PB last year because there was not other choice. Though he was a first round pick and already heir apparant, the truth is you still have to make the best of the shots you do get.

Nice job, hammb. I don't like all the talk in the papers and talk shows that have "appointed" Frye the back up already. I know Frye is a bigger investment but dammit, J5 won a lot of games at BG and is a natural born leader. He will make the most of his opportunity. Go get 'em JOSH!

#5....again. How cool.

I agree freak, J5 has his number back and all the papers have Frye over him. I have a feeling that Josh will come in to camp looking to prove something, earning that back up role and starting the next season. I personally see Frye being another disaster like Tim Couch, he had a lot of hype around him being the next Big Ben to come out of the MAC. But he could barely lead his team to winning seasons. Who am I to say though, I just watch the games I don't get paid to pick the players. Besides I just hope that the Brownies have another dismal year so we can draft Omar in 06' then we can have the battle of the BG QB's and see which one comes out on top.
