It would be really nice if the program gets to a point where the Doyt is too small.
From a 1964 program:
If, in the future, the stadium needs to be expanded, completing the oval will add 20,900 additional seats. An upper deck on the stadium would make possible another 16,600 seats. Bowling Green's stadium,at total capacity, will seat 60,000 people.

I like the trees in my picture... along with the total lack of other building, vehicles or roads. A shimmering oasis of football on the wind-swept plains of the Great Black Swamp... <insert angelic voices here>TG1996 wrote:I still think my picture's better.

A second deck would have to be pretty darned steep, I think. Otherwise, fans would start getting too far away from the field of play.BGDrew wrote:I was thinking about how a 2nd deck would be at the stadium, how would it look with another deck with such a gradual incline?
To be honest, I'm not sure our current stands are steep enough.

What strikes me about that George Jetson artists rendering is that the parking is all wrong. The parking is up on Mercer and Wooster and away from I-75 -- when in fact much of the parking is piled on I-75.ZiggyZoomba wrote:I like the trees in my picture... along with the total lack of other building, vehicles or roads. I've been to the U. of Md. for NCAA Lacrosse Championships...while we were there, they were in process of putting a 2nd deck on their stadium...and the seats were at a VERY SHARP angle, compared to BG...never had a chance to see the completed version, but the lower deck wasn't radically different from ours, if I recall correctly.... As I've said before, when BG FIRST started to build the Doyt, they talked about a 2nd deck on both sides, making the potential seating approx. 46K.... the stuff that's been posted presents a slightly different view, with enclosed "bowl" concepts etc. I don't recall that they talked that way AT FIRST.

But I do have some lingering doubt about the size of our stadum once all this stuff is done.
We will return to the pre-1982 capacity (23,000 or so) plus what appears to be a few hundred seats in the north end zone.
I guess the theory is that demand will rise and fans will be more willing to games not involving Toledo.
But it also means 6,000 fewer people will be able to see us play Miami or Toledo.
I think the most logical and perhaps best hope for an initial project to increase seating is this. Construct a convocation center which connects to the South end of the Doyt and include in its design the possibility of increased seating.
By the way--something I'm wondering about. Can a convocation center apply for public funding, e.g. state money? As far as different funding sources goes, the possibilities I'm aware of would be private donations, bonds (probably paid off by students), and government funds.
I would think that if private donations were the sole source, a feasibility study would not be necessary. But it would be if public funds were sought.

The construction, during the season, will all be North of the bleachers not interfering with them during the 2005 season.thewebboy wrote:While we're talking about the stadium, what's going on with the north stands next year since the SEBO groundbraking is taking place this summer?
As to worries about decreased seating, what about seats back in the South endzond?
The tents are there for Falcon Club and Bookstore. I am ASSUMING (you know what that can do) that the "viewing decks" on the SEBO will serve as a Falcon Club/Schmooze zone and that the Bookstore tent can be easily moved anywhere within the confines of the stadium.
This would open the door up for putting bleachers/seating back in the south endzone. Perhaps even a structure connecting the East and West stands.
I sure hope so, because that scoreboard is mounted awfully high. If that is not the long range plan I hope they consider lowering the scoreboard. That video board is adequate but looks even smaller beacuse it is up so darn high.

My impression is that the state used to help pay for such things 10-15 years ago. I think that the Cleveland State convocation center had some state help (although I could be wrong about that).Salsa wrote:Can a convocation center apply for public funding, e.g. state money?
My impression is that the state no longer wants to pay for such things as part of its capital budget.
Does anyone happen to know how Value City Arena was paid for? I don't.
