Where to stay for Wisky Game?
I have been looking around at the hotels in Madison, and it doesn't seem like many of them are really close to campus. Does anybody have any tips about where to stay in Madison? Is anybody going up on Friday night?
Thanks in advance for the info...

From what I've seen, you needed to really jump the gun (and spend a little extra jack) to get close. That said, my gun has been jumped and I'm about 10 blocks from the stadium.
We're at the Doubletree downtown, which about a month ago was renamed from a Howard Johnson. We didn't seem to have any trouble getting a room there when I called, but again, that was a month or so ago, and before spring practices.
Hopefully there are alot of Falcon fans landing there for the weekend, I'd hate to have a hotel full of angry Badgers after me when I'm screeching AZZ at 2am!

Better make sure you use the deadbolt.
I am suprised there has been no Badger fans around yet to give a little advice. Kind of gives me the feeling they are not taking us as seriously as they should be. Their message boards are filled with your usual big ten talk (Their RB should not be suspended because well.....because they were only misdemeanors). Getting 5 of them us nothing for a Big 10 player.

At that point, I'll be lucky if I end up INSIDE the room. Saturday is going to be a long long day.kdog27 wrote:Better make sure you use the deadbolt.

My favorite comment recently over there was a response to a post about how "If ESPN shows the money, the Big Ten would open up to Thursday night games."
The response was something like: "There's no way the B10 would play during the week, that's why we have the MAC."
See ya Sept. 3, jackass!

Check www.hamptoninn.com we've never had a problem with their chain of hotels.Falcon in IL wrote:I have been looking around at the hotels in Madison, and it doesn't seem like many of them are really close to campus. If I recall correctly that is the hotel I spent a couple nights in while taking a seminar from Tickets.com for work. It is a nice hotel, 9-10 stories and within walking distance from the stadium, and a liquor store... and a mexican restaraunt.factman wrote:As of today, the football team and many of the BG fans are staying at the Madison Sheraton.
Downtown Mad-town is really cool with bars and eateries and a great view of the capital at night.
all bowling green
cheap hotel
Just reserved a room at Americas Best Value Inn, 3 miles south of the stadium!! 1 room with 2 double beds, it was roughly $115 for 2 nights off of orbitz.com. Just passing the word along. It is not the nicest place in the world, but it's a pretty good deal if you lower your standards somewhat.

The Sheraton is 3 miles from the stadium. There are two hotels within walking distance (unless you walk 3 miles). The Fluno Center is about 8 blocks away, and the Doubletree is about 10 blocks away. Both are in the middle of town with lots of College Bars around. I don't like to drive, so splitting $155 with a buddy works for me at the Fluno (First Class hotel that I stayed at before) although a little steep. Cab fare is a little expensive. If you stay near the airport (lots of cheaper hotels) you'll pay about $18 each way.
Here is the official BG site for game info etc.

Crown Plaza
Because we're flying in from Cleveland ( can't stand to drive this one), we booked a "package deal thru Priceline that includes the Crown Plaza for 2 nites. It's on E.Washington Ave., supposedly about 5 mi. from UW's campus and Camp Randall.... I'm hoping they might do a shuttle deal to the game, but haven't had time to check that out yet.
If other AZZer's or Falcon Fans are staying there, willing to share a cab if need be.

I booked our set up last week through the Falcon Club. They have a bus trip planned and also rooms blocked if you are making your own way out there, as i am.
They are offering rooms at the Sheraton for $85/night. I thought it was a pretty good deal on the price and the fact other falcons will be there!
I can't wait to make the trip!

Rent a car (Useful link)
Things to do in Madison on game days
Visit the farmers' market or just walk down State Street toward campus.
(I'm assuming you're a younger type who can walk a couple of miles in a 90+ minute period)
Grab a bite on the way. (Or at least scout out places on State Street you might want to visit after the game.)
Keep walking West toward Camp Randall - follow the crowds.
About an hour or so prior to kickoff visit the Union South on Johnson Street at Randall Ave. The UW band plays a brief concert and they'll play your fight song and, of course, a whole bunch of UW stuff. They'll also have brats and beer.
Walk through the memorial arch to the Camp Randall grounds. (CR was a civil war training ground. Three of the regiments of the famed Iron Brigade trained there.)
Enjoy the game (hopefully not the score) and stay for the fifth quarter.
Then go out and enjoy Madison.
If you drink too much, there are buses around to drive you back to the Square.
Also, many motels do offer shuttles to the campus area on gameday. Not a bad idea for drinkers.
Not too much hotel space near campus, but contrary to what many natives think, this NYer thinks the driving around Madtown isn't really all that bad.

My favorite spot on Earth is the Union Terrace on Lake Mendota behind the Memorial Union. (This is not the Union South) If you walk down State from the Capitol keep walking west from Lake Street and then take a right on to the library mall. Cross the mall and head toward the union. Also visit the Rat. (Rathskeller)

Bring back the Bucky Wagon, and
ON, WISCONSIN!
ON, WISCONSIN!
Thanks for the tips! We've been slowly gathering information (in fact, I think you've helped me out on the badgermaniac board), but can't wait to get to Madison! About 5 of us are staying at the Doubletree (old HoJo) and plan on locking the car keys in the hotel room until Monday afternoon. From the maps I've seen (God love ya, Google Maps!) it looks pretty walkable from there, right?
