BG - WVU game coming?

Post by Blazer »

Talking to someone in the SID office at WVU today (trying to track down confirmation of a Marshall/WVU series), I head a rumor about a possible BG game coming.

What my source said was "You're a Bowling Green guy... I should have a story that would interest you by the end of the week."

I just hope if it that happens, it's for 2006 while I still have a contract here. Anything later than that, and I'll have already moved on to my next job.

This would be great. With the Motor City Bowl having a secondary contract with the Big East and the possibility of a new bowl between the MAC-Big East, maybe we'll see more regular season games between the MAC and Big East.

With the recent news of a 12 game season, I suppose it could be very possible that they've already gotten on the ball about scheduling the extra game. Of course, they need extra games for already set up future seasons as well.

If it *is* in 2006, what a schedule THAT would be!

What makes me think that it won't be in 2006 is that WVU and Marshall are announcing a six game series starting in '06 on Tuesday. That gives WVU five Non-Conference games that season (Maryland, Buffalo, East Carolina and Mississippi State are the others). Add that to the seven Big East games they play every year, and you have a full 12 game slate.

Unless BG will replace Buffalo on the 2006 schedule, I'm guessing this game will be in 2007 at the earliest.

If it is in 2006, mark me down for a spot at the tailgate party. I'll have to work that day (I'm the Sports Director for a NBC affiliate here), but I can come cheer on the Falcons with you guys for a little bit. If it's in '07, hopefully I'm working somehwere that I won't have College Football to cover on Saturdays so I can make the trip back to Morgantown for that one.

Wonder who Don Nehlen will be cheering for that day?

When I hear more, I'll pass the info along.

Looking at the future WVU schedule on my desk, my guess is that this game will be in 2008 at the earliest.

West Virginia has Ball State, Maryland, East Carolina and Mississippi State on the schedule for 2007. With tomorrow's announcment, you can add Marshall to that as well.

2008 has Maryland, Villanova, Marshall and East Carolina. There's an opening there.

WVU also has a home and home coming up with Florida State sometime between 2008 and 2012 as part of the settlement of the lawsuit between the Big East and ACC.

One can dream.

My dream: West Virginia plays at Perry Stadium in 2010 as part of a two-for-one.

It would be a nice way to celebrate our 100th anniversary.

Why not? Sounds good to me. That same year we are scheduled to play at OSU.

If I may step into Blazer's shoes on this, his "news" was that Don Nehlen was being inducted to the hall of fame. While I'd love to see a home and home set up with WVU, that rumor is a rumor that never was.

He's right.

My gosh, I almost started a rumor.

Didn't mean to.

Didn't you read TG/Schades response. The rumors are not about a game but rather Nehlen's induction to the hall of fame. He was a coach at BG and WVU, which is why someone from WVU might think a BG guy would be interested.

At the time, it was a very viable rumor. Even if we had our calendars marked for the day of the HOF inductions, who seriously would have made the Nehlen connection? Even with the news coming out of WVa, my lightbulb didn't go off until Blazer said "that was the big news he had for me".

If it makes you feel better, Schad, we'll let you start another rumor sometime.
