BG Logo On The Road!

Post by BGSU33 »

One of the things I enjoy most about working in college athletics and travelling to other schools is the chance to see and experience new ideas. One of these ideas jumped out at me today on my way to lunch that they do here at Virginia. They recently repaved some of the main roads around campus/town and today they went around and just put down the new Virginia logo on the freshly paved blacktop. It looks awesome! Basically, about every 50 yards or so on certain roads that runs through town and campus, they place the orange V-Sabres on the pavement, centered in the driving lane, going in both directions. I will try and get a picture of this to post so you can see what I mean.

I've seen this done here at Virginia and also at places like Clemson where they've painted orange paw prints on the roads, and also on High Street in Columbus at OSU where I've seen the "O" painted in recent years as well.

I thought this would be a great idea to do at BG with the Falcon head. Especially down Wooster Street. Now I don't know the first thing about what can or can't be done when it comes to roads in a town, but seeing it done at other places only makes me think how cool it would look at BG. It would be cool to haave this at BG.

Others can chime in here, but I always figured city residents preferred to de-emphaize BGSU somewhat.

BGSU is such a massive force in city life, I think locals prefer push the argument that "there is more to Bowling Green than BGSU."

I'd love to steal an idea from Ann Arbor, though: make all the street signs ("E Wooster St," "E Merry St," etc.) orange on brown.

In Ann Arbor, these signs are all maize on blue, and they look fantastic.

This will never happen in Bowling Green, here's why.

The city zoning board is keeping our fair city as small as possible. The board is made of many old timers, adn are all about tradition. Don't get me wrong, years and years ago when they re-did downtown to get rid of all the hanging signs, that is nice, adn the recent remake of downtown looks awesome, but they are preventing new industry from entering the area. To name one (b/c i cant think of other right now) Olive Garden wanted to put a location in BG, way out by Meijer no less, adn it was denied b/c the board did not want the sign polluting the skyline..... I hear they are gettign very upset at how E. Wooster has become near the Hwy.

The board would consider that grafitti, and there is no way they will allow it to happen, ever.

If there was anything I learned in my time as a City worker its that the City administration and the University administration don't get along all that well. In the end the U pretty much gets whatever it wants, and because of that the city administration resents them. It is definitely a hate-hate relationship from all accounts that I heard.

Its a shame about Olive Garden, but that is a true story to the way I heard it as well. If there is one thing BG is lacking its the mid-level dining. A place where you can go sit down and get a decent meal, but I'm not talking about a $25 a plate type place either. I think we have some good local eating establishments (Myles, Pollyeye's, DiBendedettos, Spots, etc), but we are sorely lacking in the chain stuff that people recognize. I'm not a huge fan of chain restaurants, but sometimes knowing what you're getting is a good thing, especially for people coming in for football games. Olive Garden, Applebees, etc would be very welcome in BG.

I will agree. Living here in the summer has taught me that the "townies" might not like us. When college gets out, it's almost like they can have their city back. You see adults with their familes at stores, restaurants, and just about everywhere else you wouldn't see them when the school year is in session. Maybe putting the logo somewhere on campus would work, but definitely not on Wooster St.

Well besides the factt hat every road on the BGSU campus needs to be repaved, I see no reason that the logo couldn't be painted on the road throughout campus. Maybe even the new text, which by the way I saw the endzone painting for Saturday's game, wow! And about it sounding high schoolish, since when has it been bad to show a little school spirit? Heck, I'd put the falcon on every building on campus if was up to me.

My thoughts exactly Hammb.

Bowling Green isn't just BGSU, granted its big part of the city, and we all recognize this, BUT, our fair city should be thriving a lot more than it is. I really dont understand how we aren't growing exponentially. DOn't get me wrong, I dotn want BG to be a big city at all. But Findlay is starting to spring up a lot, and we should be too. We need to get some better stores downtown (3 tatoo shops is not what I call a classy down town district) and the "mall" if you can call it that, needs the biggest revamp of all time. If we can bring in some upper tier shops to these areas, and some more resaurants as hammb suggested, Bowling GReen could be even greater than it is.

Also, I am not opposed ot putting some spirit on the streets. I think Alumni drive would be an excellent place, all right around the intramural fields there. Btu who knows, its not up to us, though maybe it should be??

You know what...The townie's can complain all they want about BG...But face it, if it wasn't for the University, there would be nothing in town. It would be a burg of proably about 1,000 people if that. The City vs. The University reminds me like what we were talking about on another thread about Academic Programs vs. Athletic Programs. Everyone is so stubborn that they can't see that by working togther, EVERYONES situation could be improved! I don't know much about Ann Arbor, but I don't believe as much animosity exists between UoM and A2 as it does between BG and BGSU. Can't we all jsut get along???

I saw that yesterday as well. The whole field is just in amazing shape! I stood there and just soaked it up for about 5 minutes. Grass is greener than ever, Orange numbers with white outlines, lovely Falon Font in the endzone, Mac logo, our new Falcon Logo in the middle, the new scoreboard...it's all just looks amazing for Saturday! GO FALCONS!!!!

Well if that's the case about the town of Bowling Green and BGSU, then I guess that's why I think things are "better" when it comes to stuff like that here in Charlottesville. Because although this is no doubt a college town, there's is way more to C'ville than just UVa than there is in BG than BGSU, and it gets done here. Trust me, there are many here in town who dislike the university side. It's little things like this that we miss out on IMO. Oh well......

Which logo is in the middle, the traditional one with an outline or the new bird one????????

Last night Brandon mentioned that there was more orange on that field than he as EVER seen! He seemed to be quite pleased with it!!

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
