It's academia - and football has absolutely nothing to do with the ability of a student to get a degree. You put academic buildings and residence halls near facilities that promote learning. A stadium, an overflow parking lot, a golf course, and a couple of ballfields are far from being included in that category.

A window with a view of the Doyt might attract some mooks from Moeller or St. Ed's, but scholars ought to be located closer to libraries,
admistrative offices, and classrooms.

I think he was referring to me. I stand corrected. That extra two blocks that those other dorms are away from the "east of S. College half" exclude them from me even THINKING they could make it out to the stadium.

However, students in Kohl, Rodgers, Conklin, Kreischer, Harshman, and whatever's left of the Greek stuff in between are still required to go.

And I left off-campus out of it. They have cars, or easy access to cars, I would imagine. If paying 5 bucks to park is too much to a game that they get into for free, then maybe they should reconsider their bar budget as well. Or hell, get out to the stadium earlier before they start collecting for parking, maybe?

Point is, even the closest parts of campus to downtown isn't that much farther than it is to get to the stadium. And I agree with what was said about not needing to build dorms and education out there. Keep the education in one end, the athletics in another, and make both the damn finest facilities they can be!

I only used that area once, late one night a long time ago, that is where my wife and I had our discussion about what to do with her very unexpected pregnancy. (they keep happening too)
I see people skateboarding up there a lot. That seems to be the only thing it's good for anymore.

Out of curiosity, do the university shuttles run out there on game day? If so, the distance issue is moot....if not, they should.

The times when we use to drive we use to avoid paying the five bucks by parking at the field house. Wait, that is probably still too far for many. ...we were cheap for doing that, five dollars is nothing. I have been to many of stadiums where parking is 15-25 bucks.

I rode the BG shuttle once in my time at the school. The first week I waw there when it was raining. The campus is so centrally located that you really have no need for it now. Add classrooms near the stadium, condition students to ride the shuttle and they are more likely to use it.

The reality is there is a reason people dont go to games. And this is a reason I have heard.

At Northwestern the football stadium is in such a residential/campus area that they encourage general FANS (not just students) to park and ride a shuttle bus.

No matter what you do, there will always be that group of people that will find a reason NOT to go.

When I was a student, they didn't go because they had to pay $2 to get in (for those people not smart enough to buy the All Sports Pass).

Shuttles are reserved by the Athletic Department on game day to transport the team to the stadium as well as to transport recruits and their families around the campus.

I liked it when I went there but a person not used to having to go anywhere near the football stadium for anything probably wont think to go out there for a football or a basketball game. It will just seem to far. I think using some architecture like in the older buildings on campus University hall etc. would give the campus a more classic feel and make it more aesthetically pleasing. Now its effecient but not beautiful. Why not spread campu out that way.
Yea but what if you lived at Kohl Hall or one of the fraternities? That's a looooong walk back.

I lived in Kohl hall, it must have taken me all of 20 minutes to walk that distance. Gee, I was 18 at the time and don't recall ever feeling any worse for the wear. In fact, I was also in the marching band and it was 1977...chair stepping, etc. etc. At that age especially, a 20 minute walk is nothing (not to mention that the excercise is good for you).

Hey I'm a big fan of exercise-I get out on my bike all the time (and yes it only has two wheels). I'm just thinking about the BG weather there too; a 20 minute walk isn't that bad-except when those famous winds pick up..

Here is my question, what would you put out there and where would you build it? Would the intermural fields have to be moved for buildings? Or maybe the soccer practice fields could go, we don't need practice. How about only 1 field for football, that should do wonders for them. All of that space is being used for a better purpose than having a building sit there. The only exception to that may be just south of the stadium and it is just screaming for a convication center. And of course the Sebo center.

If proximity to campus were the sole issue re student attendance, there would be no students at the hockey games and the student section at Anderson would be filled to the brim for every game.

Regardless, student attendance at the football games is the least of our problems. Getting more people not attending the University to show up is the challenge. Those people will be paying for tickets and that directly adds to the bottom line of the athletic budget. Unless I'm reading this wrongly, every student on campus could show up and it wouldn't mean an extra dime to the University (other than concessions) because their general fee includes the price of admission. You're not getting any additional revenue from them, the dollars they contribute are fixed and already on the books.

Financially, it would be great for the University if 30,000 townies showed up and all the students stayed home.

Besides...I think you'd have a real problem selling the idea of schlepping it all the way over to the athletic complex to the profs who would teach there and have offices over there
