The first student (a freshman girl) said "I didn't even know there was game". A dude said "I really don't think BG is any good" WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! You get the picture? And another freshman girl said something to the effect of that the Swamp Fest is more interesting the BG football. I could give the one freshman girl a pass since they could be out of state and never lived around here at all. The other freshman girl is probably a liberal arts major or something to that effect. But the guy who says the Falcons arent' any good? You gotta be kidding me!!! :coo-coo: Man, I sure hope arent very many of these kind of students around.

The guy said that as a joke. I know it didn't appear that way but you will have to trust me on this.
The BGNews is a bunch of idiots. If that had an ounce of sense, the only replies they should have published would be something like "Hell yea I am going to the football game, are you nuts?" That way when the students read it, they would say, "Geez, looks like everyone is going to the game, let's go there too." But instead, they read these idoits responses' and say "Hmm, if noone else is going, I think I would just rather stay in the dorm and light myself on fire. It might be more fun."

The BG News' job isn't to promote the team. The BG News' job is to cover the news.
They were obviously taking an unscientific pulse of campus. I wish everyone had told them "hell *yes* I'm going to the game." But it would have been wrong of them to rig it.

Of course it's not the BGNews' responsibilty to promote the team, but this is not publishing "the news" either. A sample of three random people is not news. I take it this was the people in the street section that is always so intelligent that it makes you proud you ever went to or are currently at BG.

I understand their job is to report the news. But do you think they asked only three students the question and printed those three answers? C'mon, I bet they talked to half a dozen at least and then picked which ones to print. So why not print the ones that will get more students to the game?
Um, and related to newspaper's duty to report the news, are you telling me that media outlets don't slant things to present a certain point of view that they wish to propogate? I guess that "liberal media bias" and Fox News Channel being slightly conservative are just things in my imagination.

Correctly stated: It is NOT the job of The BG News to promote the football team. That being said, if you do a man on the street, you're supposed to find a vareity of opinion, which may, in fact, mean interviewing several people and NOT using their quotes to avoid repitition.
OK, so when will they get that right too? They have a nice web site. But the student paper hasn't been worth much for most of BGSU's history.
If I had feelings, they'd be hurt. But I can say with great assurance that, for at least certain stretches, The News was considered one of the best student-run newspapers in the country.
Hey, look at me! I'm all over the InterWebs! Facebook ~ Twitter @ CoachKarlPA ~ LinkedIn
I'm going to both events. I think the BG News is FAR superior to just about every other college newspaper I've ever read.
I think this "man-on-the-street" type of feature probably DID raise awareness that there was a game this weekend. That and the articles they've run ALL WEEK LONG about the football team.
This thread is silly.

It is silly. I think the paper is far better than its low point five or six years ago. And I won't impugn the efforts of the kids working on it now directly. However I don't think it breaks much ground, or really gets in depth in terms of campus topics, general higher-ed topics, etc. That in my view is a function of the department advising it more than anything. Plus there isn't exactly a huge amount of material in terms of burning news topics in NW Ohio. However that shouldn't prevent carefully researched articles and items that would really provide NEWS to the students, educate minds, broaden views. The sports section might be the best part of the paper if only because the writers seem to really be interested in what they are writing about.
But for heavy weight student news? The BG News is competant, but not much more than a token voice locally. That might have to do with the culture of BGSU as much as anything.

Damn straight. In 1989 -- despite my presence on the staff -- SPJ named The BG News the best student daily in the nation.

That's a fair point. It wasn't clear to me that they this was a man on the street that only included three people.
