For the up and coming season

Post by Rightupinthere »

What are we to expect?

1: Show ideas (if you're allowed to say)?

2: New cadences? I'm interested in this. I'm not opposed to it, mind you. I didn't favor some of the attitudes towards the current cadences in previous threads.

3: Numbers of returning?

4: Y'all going replace the proper nomenclature to The Grinder?

5: What improvements do you all want to see in regards to the band?

As far as the shows go, we don't find anything out until the leadership meeting before the start of fundies week. Since I will be at that meeting, as soon as I find out anything, I will try to post it as soon as I can, assuming no one else beats me to it. I can't really answer the next 3 questions, but as far as what I want to see improve, the biggest things that I would like to see improve are marching fundamentals and rehearsal etiquette. It drove me crazy last year when people were just plain disrespectful during rehearsals, and I think we could get a lot more accomplished if that were to improve. As far as marching fundamentals, it always seems to me (maybe it's different for other people, I don't know) that the marching fundamentals decline as the season progresses. They seem to start out well in fundies week, and then once the block is set and people see that they are in pregame, or that they are in halftime, they start to not care as much about the fundamentals. There is always room for improvement in other areas as well, but for me, these are the two biggest things I would like to see improve this coming season.

1- No idea.... well at least no official idea.

2- No idea. Really.

3- From what I've seen and heard, seems like a lot of returners are expected. I've heard the cap of 250 members (right?) may have to be put into play.

4- Doubt it.

5- I agree with Lozer on both counts. I'd like to have marching-fundamental sectionals-- for my section, at least-- obviously I don't have a say for other sections. And I've always been irritated by people who TALK when they're at ATTENTION! (Not that I haven't done it a few times, but I feel horribly guilty afterwards, lol.)

There should be no cap. I was always totally against the whole "everyone marches" thing but there should be no cap. Alternates can and should be used...

NO CAP!!!!! If they can pass the standard set then they are in. Now I do believe the pre-game block should have consistency. It was 225 when i marched. But don't cap the group. I would love to see 350 in the stands. Now as to the cadences, keep the old and add to them. I hate the fact that the call back section has dissapeared totally. Bring it back, please!

Well, even if there isn't an official cap, we obviously can't have more marchers than uniforms. Hey Erica, how many uniforms did we order last year? All I can say is that the more marchers we have to outfit, the more, uh, interesting, uniform fittings will be. While I doubt we'll actually run out of uniforms, making sure that most people have uniforms that relatively fit them will be a challenge.

And the thing is, we can't all fit in Kelly Hall if there are many more than 250. We're a fire hazard as it is-- isn't the official capacity (as posted on the wall) something like 150 people?

I have nothing against a huge marching band, but the fact is, we just don't have the facilities/equipment/uniforms/etc to support one at the present time.

Indoor rehersals in Kobacker Hall, or Bryan if absolutly necessary. As for the unifroms, if people meet the standards set then unifroms should be purchased. I know they may not be in for the first couple games, but those can be for the alternates.

Personally, I can only handle so many rehearsals in Kobacker, mainly because of the scorching stage lights. And gosh, now that I think about it, our rehearsals onstage are even more cramped than they are in Kelly. As for Bryan, it's smaller than either Kelly or Kobacker.

Now, if good old Mr. Sebo provided a little extra funding for marching band facilities inside the new athletic center (similar to TBDBITL's facilities inside the 'Shoe- yes, I know, we don't have the hoards of wealthy alumni that they do, but even just a rehearsal room like theirs would be stellar), then perhaps we could get a practice room that is roomy enough for a band upwards of 200 members. I mean, we did spell out his name on the field, after all...

Also, I don't seen any more uniforms being purchased for a while. Now that we have this new set, it looks like the next financial focus will be to start working on replacing some of the ancient school-owned instruments, such as mellohones and euphonia (and possibly sousaphones? I've only heard stuff about mellos and euphs, but the sousas are in bad shape as well); we got two new mellos last season, and I'm sure there are more new instruments coming this season. You have to take care of the equipment for current members before you start making accomodations for future numbers.

We bought 275 uniforms, and if we need more, they will be purchased. Period.

Yeah Jackie. I can assure you that the school owned Marching Band instruments are all in pretty bad shape. From what I hear (saxy, back me up on this), the Tenor saxes are all pretty horrible, the mellos are no good (except for the new ones), the euphs are all mediocre, and the Sousas are all about to die. Thank god that they've started to get a few new cases for the sousas at least, but I can assure you from loading the truck, that there are still a good handful of Sousaphone cases that don't have all of their handles or latches.

Yeah, the instrument situation is about as pretty as Rosanne Barr in a thong.

I think that as one of the BEST musical groups in Ohio, yes I mean that, that you should be able to get funding for new instruments. I downloaded some of your music, and MAN you guys rock. I'd put you before the Marching 112 of OhioU. Behind Miami of course, but there is a bias there. Anyone who has runs like in your fite song, IN the fight song deserves respect. Hope to see you on the field in Yager this season, maybe they'll do a battle of the bands? It is always fun to see what other bands do, and I am a HUGE fan of Pre-Game. You guys will get what you need, and be the better for it.

AWESOME

Thanks so much for the praise, Bando!! Two years ago we brought a pep band to the BG/Miami game, and I remember how nice the band members were to us. I think your friendliness was especially noticed and appreciated because it was such a stark contrast to how the Miami fans behaved towards us; I don't think I've ever been treated as badly as they treated the pep band that night. Don't get me wrong- I'm not trying to bash your school. I suppose it just still amazes me that the school with one of the friendliest bands I've met could have fans that, well, very much aren't. I really hope that our fans didn't treat you like that when your band came to BG for the MAC West Championship later that season!!

Looking forward to seeing you guys!! Hopefully we'll at least send down a pep band to the game.

That was terrible placement for you guys. If they stuck Miami's band in the middle of BG fans, the same thing would happen. Gotta love rivalries...

Yeah, I'm with Metger on this one. Me thinks alcohol might have played a small part in their behavior as well. It happens. Sorry.

In addition, I still remember in 2000, when Marshall's fans were sitting directly behind the FMB, and throwing hot pennies at us (they held them in tweezers and lit them with their cigarette lighters. Thats bad, and we had to walk uphill both ways, in the snow too. OK, Jeff
