"the nations best qb?"

1st and Ten – How Good is Good? – College football writers/media are always looking to one up each other. They’re always looking for the next star. The next BMOC. Then, they can proclaim to the masses that they ‘discovered’ the next college football star. Well, it seems that almost everyone is touting Bowling Green QB Omar Jacobs as the next star, which should tell you, in actuality, how good he is. But, let’s take a look at how good he really was last season. Let’s compare the numbers from a set of all-time great college quarterbacks.
Ty Detmer – 4,560 yards, 32 TDs and 15 interceptions, -127 yards rushing
Danny Wuerffel – 3,625 yards, 39 TDs and 13 Interceptions, -100 yards rushing
Jason White – 3,846 yards, 40 TDs and 10 interceptions, -150 yards rushing
Carson Palmer – 3,639 yards, 32 TDs and 10 interceptions
Matt Leinart – 3,322 yards, 33 TDs and 6 interceptions, -44 yards rushing
Omar Jacobs – 4,002 yards, 41 TDs and 4 interceptions, 300 yards rushing
The five gentlemen listed above all won the Heisman, and the stats shown are from those Heisman seasons. Jacobs’ season not only compares in most cases, but even overwhelms the previous Heisman winners’ numbers. Perhaps the most telling statistic is the four interceptions. He threw the ball 462 times (close to 40 times a game) last year and only four were intercepted. Four. You just don’t do that as a first year starter in college football, not even on XBOX. Considering that 2004 was Jacobs first full year under center, uh, it’s safe to say that he was downright phenomenal. Now, the comparison to Heisman Trophy winners is difficult on a lot of levels, with one of those being the fact that Jacobs has to overcome the ‘mid-major’, lack of competition argument to even get a sniff of the Trophy. But, no matter where your team resides or what league they’re in, those are downright fantastic numbers and there’s no question that Jacobs should be in the running for the stiff armed Trophy (should be and whether he will be are two totally different issues). The expectations for Jacobs are through the roof this season, and deservedly so. But, then again, the thought was that the Falcon offense might slow down after losing former starter Josh Harris last year. Not only did they not slow down, they blew the roof off the joint. Even though Jacobs loses 60% of his OL and WR Cole Magner, don’t expect Jacobs and the offense to fall off one bit. Especially now that he knows what he should be doing.
