Early Offers

Taking information from www.scout.com, BG has offered a few players from the class of 2006 already. Here are names, etc.

QB Darren Rogers 6'0"/176/4.5 Pennsylvania
WR Troy Pascley 6'2"/180/4.4 Alliance, OH (Marlington)
WR Michael Strickland 6'1"/190/4.6 Georgia
LB Kevin Green 6'2"/200/4.5 Illinois


Obviously this probably isn't the entire list (it may not even be accurate for all we know), but it gives us something to talk about. There are 10 more players with interest in BG listed on this site alone. What are the thoughts?

I don't believe those players have been offered anything. I don't think they're allowed to offer them anything yet. However, those players might have BG down as a school of interest.

They can offer whenever. I've seen kids choose a school their sophomore year. They're not allowed to SIGN, but they can certainly be offered and verbally accept schollies whenever.

Well...sort of. The NCAA does have certain restricitions on the type of contact you can have with prospective student athletes throughout the calendar year. There are several "quiet periods" when you can't contact kids at all.

This kid only runs a 4.63 and he's 5'8 to boot? I don't think we want someone that short in secondary and with rather slow speed. Gosh think Jelani Jordan only shorter and maybayae a little slower possibly! Yikes! :ugh:

You cannot make me believe that kid ran a 10.8 in the 100m, but only runs a 4.63 40.

There's no way that scout.com time is accurate, if his track times are, which I have to believe they are.

Still rather small in my opinion. The smaller the cornerback the faster they have to be to be of any use and they also have to have very explosive leaping ability to make up for the lack of size.

Sometimes a kid plays faster than he runs. But to back hammb up, you are completely correct. If that kid runs a 10.8 100 M Dash, there is no way he only runs a 4.63. We have a kid that can run the 100 M Dash in 11.3 or something and was clocked at 4.50 in the 40 on a stone track. He has to be faster.

If Rivals has him as a 4.52 in the forty and with his personal bests (undoubtedly with digital timing) at 10.8 in the 100m and 21.8 in the 200m I would summize that this kid would have good closing speed as he seems to pick up speed the farther he goes. And yes I realize the second 100m begins at a full run, but he has also run 100m before he begins the second 100m.

Besides, Purdue offered this kid a scholarship and they usually have one of the best D's in the Big Ten year in and year out so that is good enough for me! Not to mention the write-up at scout.com say he was a good tackler in run support.

Of course we could always pass this kid up for all those 6'2" 4.4 guys just waiting to sign with MAC schools

Most of those 40 yrd times are pure fiction. Here is how various 40 yd times can be extrapolated into something more meaningful: (all electronically timed) --- add 0.2 seconds for hand time

4.34 (40 yd) = 10.2 sec 100 meters (world class)

4.43 = 10.4 sec 100 meters (rare for a HS sprinter)

4.54 = 10.6 sec 100 meters

4.63 = 10.8 sec 100 meters

4.85 = 11.0 sec 100 meters

Fastest times at the State meet this year (Div I) was 10.7. Nobody in
Div. II or III broke 11 seconds). NOBODY AT BG RUNS A 4.4 FORTY! Live with it.

I would suspect that is pretty accurate and I believe you when you say that most of the 40 times we read are garbage. There just simply not that many people out there that can run 4.4's.

Thank you, Kdog, for listening/believing. The information is correct ---- it was compiled from several websites offering information on these fictional 40 yd time trials and from my own experience which is fairly extensive. I don't like bursting bubbles; but somebody has to help cleanup these exaggerated resumes. ------ The average time for running backs at last spring's NFL Combine was 4.62, and 4.52 for the receivers. According to the vibrations I'm picking up from the BG enthusiasts and their recruiting stories, is that a 4.4 forty is just kind of common place. It just ain't so.
The to the Ohio Track and Field news (which I have in front of me), the fastest posted time in the 100 meters (boys) entering the State Finals last year was 10.91 (electroncially times). That would equal about a 4.79 40. That being the case, where is Bowling Green getting all of these State Sprint champions --- not from Ohio.

I know that for the most part those times are probaly correct but you said it yourself that these are just fictional. The 40 and the 100 are different "sprints". Somebody could be a lot faster in the first 40-50 yards then slow by the end of the race.
