I'm not so sure we'd be having these discussions about issues and players leaving if it were not for some bad luck mixed in. How differently would have things likely worked out with a 100% healthy Germain Fitch and Josh Almanson over the past couple of seasons? This is something you'll never hear Coach Dakich and his staff bring up, but it is a reality of the situation.
Having Fitch and Almanson healthy for the past two seasons would have been huge when Kevin Netter got into foul trouble and had to sit.
What I'd like to see is someone on the court step up and be a floor leader. When Cole Magner was playing a couple of years ago, you could feel the difference in intensity of all others around him on the floor (and in the crowd) based on Cole's approach to the game. He played at a higher level - not in ability but approach.
This was the way that Brandon Pardon led, and someone else needs to take on this role.

I think that was the downfall last seaon. We had so much talent that I really cant comprehend how we had a losign season. Until you look at the fact that we had no leader. I think John and Josh will step it up this year and take on that role. John mroe than anyone else, plays with every ounce of his body. That guy is physically and mentally drained after a game, b/c he gives it his all every minute on the court, thats what a leader does.transfer2BGSU wrote:It's called SENIOR LEADERSHIP - something this team has lacked for a few years.Gordie81 wrote:This was the way that Brandon Pardon led, and someone else needs to take on this role.

Good point Gordie about Fitch and Almanson being hurt.Gordie81 wrote:I'm not so sure we'd be having these discussions about issues and players leaving if it were not for some bad luck mixed in. Arena Concerns
It seems that whenever we start talking about the problems within the men's basketball program someone has to respond with comments about Anderson Arena. I am in favor of a new arena, not just for basketball, but for many other revenue generating opportunities such as concerts. That being said, I do not feel this team deserves to play in a new facility. I can remember back to either the first or second year DD was here and a story Anthony Stacy told me. The day after a terrible practice the team entered the locker room to find everything from their lockers on the floor, and garbage bags hanging up. A note on the board read something like "this team does not deserve to practice, let alone play, in this arena. Put your stuff in the garbage bag in your locker and get to the field house for practice." Right now I feel like that towards the team and more so the coaching staff. I would sooner build a new facility and move the women's team into it before this team. Look at the imporvements that have been made at Doyt Perry Stadium. Those did not happen while we were in the middle of a six season loosing season. The team had to prove they were an investment. This team must do the same thing. What good is a 10,000 seat arena if we only put 3,000 in it consistently. Thats a waste of money. I don't have all the answers to this problem, but it seems to always go back to one person, Dan Dakich.

Whew !!!
That's a pretty dark view, Mr. Lyons, especially for someone calling himself "FinallyIn04". Maybe you should call yourself "NotUntil2019" instead?
Actually, I'm on board with you. Ultimately, the value and future of a program boils down to one man - the head coach. With the right coach, the wins, community support, and talent will be there, no matter what the school. Other posters have very sensibly pointed out the DD has had bad luck with injuries, and that the records would've been better otherwise. However, there was more than enough talent to win big last year, and I don't know who else to blame. DD is in a position where he must prove himself all over again.
Talk of a new facility outside of the context of a strongly emerging program winning 20+ per year and consistently playing in the post-season doesn't make much sense. After McLeod's senior year, I believed that we were that sort of program. At that point, I had a strong desire for a new facility. That desire has dried up since having multiple losing seasons.

He's got two year's left on his deal. The real question is under what circumstances do you offer him an extension this year rather than letting him twist in the wind for that final year?
I don't think you extend him for anything short of an NCAA birth. I know you run the risk of driving the price up if we have a good year this year and a very good year the next, but the last three years have been so middling that I'd need more than one good year before I bite on an extension.
It'll be intersting to see how Krebs and DD play this one out.

I'd more or less agree. If he can coach this group to 20 wins, then I'd be happy to have them extend the deal.Flipper wrote:He's got two year's left on his deal. I think you tell him that we'll sit down in two years and decide then if we're going to negotiate a new contract or go our separate ways.
I'm not in favor of this one good year, five year extension stuff. You signed a contract for five years, we'll negotiate in five years (four if you've had four good seasons).
Don't get me wrong - I like Dan Dakich (as a person, as a coach, and as a member of the BGSU community). But I think he is going to need two decent seasons for an extenion or new contract. I don't see an NCAA berth being the requirement with AD Krebs, but I do see the need to win games.

He has at least won a title here, which was more than his predecessor did in his first...how many years? I also recall a parade of players leaving BGSU with Laranaga here, players that might have made a real difference at times. Having said that, he won a title in his last year, and the feeling was strong that BG should let him go anyway, lest we had gotten stuck with five more years of under-achievement.
BGSU needs a new building. It has needed one for twenty years. They have started the studies in advance of building it. I start to wonder if real money isn't waiting on the sidelines for the project to start. The campus situation has started to resemble that from when Ribeau first got here, in that spending big money on a facility of limited general use might be hard to sell. With pay on campus still an issue, poorly handled the convo center could be a focal point for another push to unionize. If they do the study, develop some appearance of student support-real or otherwise-and a few major donors and a major sponsor happen to suddenly crop-up, its an easier sell.
With the capital campaign, I can see logic in not having put it on the docket. It would have become a target for those opposed to it, when other academic facility needs remain.
