Well...that certainly is unfortunate. Stuff like this is why I caution people from getting all worked up over recruiting classes in February. YOu never know what's going to happen with a kid before they get here, much less after.

You're right Flip. You just never know. I'll tell ya one thing...I'm done getting on other schools' cases for stuff like this. We are no different. Even though Nick hasn't stepped onto the field as a Falcon, he is still a recruit.

Any thoughts? Do we pull his schollie?

If he's found guilty (which it sounds like he definitely was, though the "drug test" business at the end of the story casts some doubt), we definitely don't need him. If he somehow is cleared of this, we put him in front of the team and have him explain why f'ing with that stuff is a stupid idea.

And if we DO pull his scholarship, is it too late to find a JUCO prospect and get them suited up?

Wow, this isn't good news at all. I guess when a kid's parent is the mayor you do not expect things like this to happen. But, when I was in high school it was always the kids that one would never suspect smoking marijuana that were doing it. If his drug test came back negative, that is a good thing. If this is his first time in trouble, I say you give the kid another chance. He is not quite a BG student yet, so it is tough to say. I think the coaches need to talk to this kid as soon as he gets on campus, if not now. Let him know that anything like this will not be tolerated and he will be on a one way bus back to Michigan if it does happen again.

I somewhat agree, except that if he's already to the point of being "watched" by undercover cops to the point of selling to them, not to mention the medicine cabinet he was trying to unload on them, its a much bigger deal.

I don't know if its his first time in trouble, its apparently just his first time getting caught.

Tough call for sure. I tend to agree with TG.

"A police source told Local 4 that Lawrence had been selling marijuana to undercover narcotics officers and had been under investigation for several weeks. Investigators also executed a search warrant on the home where Lawrence lives with his family."

Getting caught blazing up is one thing...under investigation for several weeks? Much more serious.

Damn.

If he's guilty, I'd rather not see him playing here. There's a difference between getting caught with some weed like Fitch and selling it (not to mention the roids and other drugs).

Yank that scholarship from him faster than stealing a piece of candy from a kid. Weed is bad enough, then when your dealing with a date rape drug, thats a whole new ballgame. I wouldn't want him anywhere near the football field at BG.

The biggest issue here is the steroids dealing. It goes to the integrity of the game.

To keep a kid on the team who had been dealing steroids? That's really tough to justify. I don't want to lose one of our star recruits any more than the next guy, but how would it look if, for the next five years, we have a convicted steroid dealer on the team?

This sucks.

A afterthought on this "date rape" idea:

Ecstasy has long been used recreationally on its own merits. I haven't used it, but I can recall going to underground raves 12, 13 years ago up in Detroit and other places where it was clearly being used. I think it use can be traced back to the West Coast far earlier than that.

There may be some dirtbags who have adapted ecstasy into a date rape drug, but I would never assume that use.

GHB and rohypnol are a different matter, and far more strongly linked to date rape in my mind. But Lawrence isn't accused of dealing that stuff, according to the story.

I would rather not see this guy on the team at all. Brandon has a chance to do the right thing, I hope he does.

I agree. If you take a kid that has this out in the public, it makes you wonder what kind of players BG has that haven't been caught?

In other words it calls into question the integrity of the rest of the BG players. It may not be fair, but that is the public perception.

I know Mizzou had a problem with something like that. They recruited a kid that was charged with molesting a young girl. Mizzou didn't know about it, yet the public perception was that Mizzou recruited rapists and thugs.

I don't want BG to get that kind of reputation.

I hope the kid does get a speedy trial though. If he isn't guilty, then BG probably will allow him on the team or run the risk of a lawsuit from the kids parents. I still probably would be uneasy about having him on the team though. Having someone even accused of selling steroids brings the wrong kind of attention to the program.

Well unless you are the Air Force Academy. Then you can use the excuse "we didn't know they were steroids" and get away with it.

Can this man faster than he can spit nails! No joke, I would rather not see BG put up with A&M, or the like, when it comes to recruits. Brandon knows what is right, and I know he will do what he feels is best.

I agree...bummer for sure but this kind of thing shouldn't be tolerated at BGSU. Sorry kid....hope everything works out for you. Tough lesson to learn.
