The Browns are a team rebuilding and probably not going to challenge for the division or even make the playoffs. Why carrier too much experience? Why name Johnson the #2 already? I mean unless you are Mke Martz that is really a surprising move.
Agreed. With Doug Johnson you get an experienced guy who has proven that he is no good. By picking him up you're taking a younger, talented guy, and taking away his reps in practice. I hope Josh beats him out.
Dilfer/Johnson/Frye is certainly not my ideal depth chart, and I'm not convinced that Dilfer/Harris/Frye is really any worse.
Unfortunately, it seems that a big reason for this is that Harris struggled in the last camp. Hopefully this will put even more motivation on him and he'll clearly outplay Johnson in camp. They didn't give Johnson a signing bonus, so there is really no incentive to keep him on the active roster if he is not a clear upgrade at the position.

Dilfer/Insert Name Here/Frye, I would hope this would be no team's ideal depth chart. The problem is not with Frye, Harris, or Johnson. The problem is that Dilfer is going to be the Browns starting QB this season. He is not the QB of the future for the Browns nor is he going to be expected to do great things this season. He is not in Cleveland to cary them on his shoulders and win football games, he is there to hold down the spot and hopefully make very few mistakes as to not lose football games.
The thing with Dilfer is that he is supposedly a great leader, teammate, and teacher. The staffs in Seattle have raved about his ability to play mentor to Hasselback, who has become one of the better QBs in the league. In fact they loved him so much that they sought out the trade with the Browns so he'd have a chance to start somewhere again.
He was brought in thinking that he'd be a great mentor to any young guys we have, and also could play for a while right now. He is also the definition of a team player, and a great role model for all the young guys on Cleveland's roster.
I think we all know that the Browns will likely suck balls this year. I'm fine with that, if they look like they're building a foundation for the future. It sure seems like they've got a good start with Savage & Crennel. Hopefully Josh can sap some knowledge from Dilfer, and compete his heart out for the backup job. Even if he doesn't make the roster this year, hopefully he can take what he learned and use it to get another shot somewhere else.
Not one to follow the NFL much except for MAC players, I'll believe Josh is done in Cleveland when I hear the Browns have released or cut him.
J5's intangibles are great....he will need to prove himself physically on the field.
But this guy's spirit is awesome...Josh WILL do his best. Hopefully, it will be good enough. If not in Cleveland, somewhere else. If bums like Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf and so can hang on in the league for multiple years, certainly a talented dude like Josh can make it. Orange and Brown glasses? Maybe... But I believe in the guy....LET 'EM RIP, JOSH!

The problem with that comparison, Freak, is that those guys were top 3 draft picks. They were given HUGE signing bonuses that made releasing them nearly impossible for the cap implications. Harris doesn't have that signing bonus to ensure his roster spot.
I still think he's worthy of being on an NFL roster, and if not Cleveland's may he find good luck somewhere else.
I am hoping Josh at least gets a chance to show his wares in the pre-season. If the Browns release him anyway because they want to keep a veteran, he will at least have had the opportunity to show some other teams what he can do. That would give him a better shot to catch on somewhere else. If he gets released before then, I'm afraid he could be done in the NFL.

I think we all (or, at least, most of us) can agree that Frye isn't going to be released or sent to the practice squad. But, why should we assume that Harris is going to be the odd man out? It isn't uncommon for veteran QBs like Johnson to be signed and released in the same summer. Heck, it happened to Johnson in Tennessee. I'm not going to take Johnson's word for it.

Whether I was clear or not in my previous posts, that is my opinion as well. Frye & Dilfer are locks. It will be a competition between Johnson & Harris for that other roster spot, IMO. I've seen Johnson play and I'm not ready to concede that spot to him based on his past play.
