Way to go Jordan. Nobody deserves it more than you do. Good luck.

Damn. Can't they give 3 of them away? We all know what Jordan has gone through the last year and change, he's a hell of a trooper for handling it the way he has, and I'll vote my tail off for him, but those top two are tough to look past. If I were to put alma mater aside, I don't think I could honestly put him in front of the girl from Washington. I don't know what its like to walk across the room with the symptoms of MS, much less play a hockey game, but this chick had a heart attack! If there's anything bigger to "comeback" from than almost dying on the gym floor, I don't want to know about it.

Here is the BGSUFalcons.com article. I guess my friend was right when he said he saw that on the news! He has some REALLY tough competition though...

As much as I want Siggy to get the award my vote would hae to go to:

Kayla Burt. That is quite an accomplishment. But I was wondering where is Mike Tyson listed at on this prestige list of athletes.

Congrats to Jordan!!

I agree that coming back from a heart attack to play competitive sports is impressive, but LOTS of people come back from heart attacks and live very productive and physically active lives. Hardly ANYONE "comes back" from Multiple Sclerosis. Jordan battles the effects of this EVERY SINGLE DAY OF HIS LIFE now. I doubt if there is a minute of his waking moments that he doesn't know it's there! EVERY day is a "come back" for him!!! To me, and I know I am VERY personally biased towards him, there is NO ONE who deserves this more than him. NO ONE.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Are you sitting down?

The guy from the Panthers won, the one who recovered from cancer to come back and play.

As I said in the original thread (this one, I guess), I was pulling for Jordan to win, obviously, but you can hardly fault the decision. They should have given 'em ALL awards.

We were all pulling for Jordan on this board. How did you find out who won?

Power of working in the media. The AP wire published the full list. I wouldn't be surprised if it was on Google News by now, too.

But before you look, care to make a wager on "athlete of the year"?? :D

I only voted for all the nominees once (obviously for Jordan a TON of times, obviously not enough though.... ), so I have no idea who else was in the running for hardly any of the awards, but feel free to give us a heads up on any of it!! :D

Lance Armstrong and Annika Sorenstam were the male/female athletes of the year, the Red Sox (big surprise... YAWN!) were the "team of the year"... there are others, obviously, but perhaps I've said too much.

Anyway, here's a story that just crossed the wire on Fields:

Fields to begin new round of chemo
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Carolina linebacker Mark Fields picked up an
ESPY Award for best comeback Wednesday night before he begins
treatment for a recurrence of Hodgkin's disease.
"This will be some inspiration," Fields said, holding his
trophy.
He will start a round of chemotherapy Thursday at the Mayo
Clinic in Phoenix and will miss the upcoming NFL season.
"My intentions are to come back again," he said. "If you're
going to get cancer, this is kind of the one to get."
Sidelined because of cancer for the first time in 2003 when the
Panthers made the Super Bowl, Fields returned last season and made
the Pro Bowl for the second time. He had 60 tackles, four sacks,
one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception.
"It's quite devastating, but all you can do is keep pounding,"
he said.
