Trev Alberts and Mark May

Shout out to Botox for the site...

Thought this one was hilarious about our boys Trev Alberts and Mark May -

You're Alberts and May, Not Woodward and Bernstein... @$$holes

I'm still a little stunned by the antics of Trev Alberts and Mark May, who, during halftime of the Alamo Bowl- a game in which the Buckeyes were playing- declared that the state of the OSU football program demanded that Tressel either resign or be fired. You'd think it was like the last days of the Switzer Regime at Oklahoma, the way Alberts, May, and their host network piled on the Buckeyes last fall. You'd think chicks were getting gang-raped in the players' dorms and Troy Smith was dealing coke right out of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, Charles Thompson-style. Uh, not quite. Turned out a booster had given Smith $500.00. That's it. Smith will sit out the opening game this fall. That's it. There wasn't even enough to warrant sanctions against the football program. Yes, I am an apologist for Ohio State football and Jim Tressel. But even a Michigan fan could have seen the chicanery of Alberts, May, Tom Friend et al for the shoddy stuff it was- would-be crusaders creating a story, instead of merely reporting one. And I'm pretty sure ESPN (or "E-SPIN" as it's known in Buckeyeland) tried to screw the University of Tennessee the same way right after they won their National Championship. Guys, you ain't Cronkite, you ain't Huntley, and you sure as hell ain't Edward R. Murrow. You're a couple of ex-jocks who are there to read the scores. Read them!

A) They're sure as hell not MY "boys".
B) My response here should probably go in "Other Schools", but I don't think they're all THAT bad. Sure they're idiots sometimes, but I think if anything, its just taking the "say whats on your mind that will get a reaction" a little far most of the time. Besides, OSU "fans" will get their panties in a bundle if Alberts says its "partly cloudy" in Columbus, when they believe its "partly sunny".

This is why those guys are there. They get people to talk about them. Notice you hear many people say how much they cannot stand them. Yet they still watch them every saturday....hmm.

Alberts & May, as well as Davie and James are absolutely worthless. kdog - I have stopped watching the ESPN college football shows specifically because of them. I suffer through Davie (Davies?) doing play-by-play, but refuse to watch the studio segments. They are repulsive.

The real comedy in Mark May's position during the Alamo broadcast (Which as you may recall was one of complete disgust - callin for heads to roll) was that he played under Jackie Sherrill at Pitt. Sherrill who's cheating tactics provoked JoPa to say, in '79, that he couldn't stand the thought of leaving college football to the Jackie Sherrills and Barry Switzers of the world. Paterno later apologized to Switzer but wrote in his own book, "I didn't give a damn about what Sherrill felt."

Jackie Sherrill who was forced out at Texas A&M in 1988 after a seven-year run, not long before the Aggies were hit with NCAA sanctions.

Jackie Sherrill who's Mississippi State program was put on NCAA probation in '95 and then again for another 4 years upon his depature....

I'm sure May was really embarrassed for the game of college football about what was reportedly going on at Ohio State.

Trev, by the way, "played under Tom Osbourne. As coach of Nebraska, Osborne made millions of dollars building championship teams out of guys who, off the field, were mysogonist, lecherous s**t bags who raped and beat women, practiced wholesale thuggery, and generally considered themselves untouchable because, dammit, they were Nebraska football players.

And with good reason. They had a coach who let them get away with murder. Or damn near it.

Coach Osborne suspended defensive star Christian Peter just one exhibition game after he was twice accused of rape, once convicted and several more times accused of sexual assault, and, also, of "disturbing the peace, trespassing, urinating in public, refusing to comply with the order of a policeman, threatening to kill a parking attendant, and possessing alcoholic beverages while under the age of 21."

Emphasis mine, because it'll be important later.

And that's just Peter. Let's talk about Lawrence Phillips, a superstar running back to whom Osborne gave second, third and fourth chances, despite his no contest plea to tossing his girlfriend down a stairwell, in addition to numerous other accusations of assault, sexual and otherwise. Since he's left Nebraska, the guy's life has been one long arrest record."
[Quote from http://www.theagitator.com/archives/010257.php]

I'm sure Trev was outraged as well... And no doubt he'll be equally outraged as the 05 season begins and he gets to talk about OSU's unpaid parking ticket violators, pot smokers and dope dealers.

Didn't Sherrill castrate a bull in front of his team before a big game once?

Sort of interesting to have a Buckeyes fan calling the kettle black though.

James seems to go out of his way to demean "mid-major" schools and point out how they're not really comparable to the BCS dinosaurs.

The strange thing is that he's a graduate of fellow BCS exile SMU and enjoyed a pretty fruitful college career.

Self-loathing, anyone?

As I said over on the Wisky thread, the NCAA has been here, twice, and they came away having found exactly 1 problem with Ohio State's football program (I'm not talking basketball, of course, as that is a different matter) The problem they found was the Try Smith $500.00 from a booster. a problem that was self reported before the bowl game, Smith was suspended for that game (And the Miami, Oh game) immediately.

All I'm saying is, despite the ringer the media has run OSU though, the people ACTUALLY in charge of these things, the NCAA itself, found all but nothing wrong with the football program. Thus, despite the bad press, Ohio State is, in reality, "clean." Also like I said on the Wisky thread, have the NCAA come to your school with the microsope they brought to Cbus, and when your school passes the test, then we can talk about clean programs. I'm not calling BGSU dirty, please don't misunderstand, I'm simply saying the perception, in this case, is NOT the reality. As an OSU fan and Alum, I feel I have to dispell this unwarranted myth when it rears it's ugly head.

My post above is "calling the kettle black" in response to the Trev and Mark May comments, something I wouldn't have done without the catalyst. If I had hung that out there unprovoked, I could better see your point. (ie, If I had claimed OSU is clean, and then someone brought up the Trev and Mark May stuff) And, under the circumstances of the reality that the Ohio State program has a "clean bill of health" as far as the NCAA is concerned, I'm not really the pot, nor the kettle.

Of course, I don't excuse what Smith did. He was wrong, and he should pay the penalty. Which, is exactly what is occuring. The real blame is on the friggin "booster" but Smith still should have known better and bares enough responsibilty to warrant his punishment. In this circusmtance, however, Ohio State did precisely what it should have. Self reported, dealt with the situation, invited scrutiny and cooperated fully.

it's sadly good to hear (wait; is that melancholy?) that somebody else feels the same way about alberts and james.

both are tools who go out of their WAY to insult any non-BCS team, especially those who have experienced even a little success.

i don't have as much of a problem with mark may; he usually just states an opinion without demeaning a team. alberts and james have in the last couple of years taken completely unnecessary shots at Boise State that had nothing to do with analysis.

as for corso and herbstreit, corso's just a travelling village idiot who's about as deep as a death valley puddle. herbstreit lost a huge amount of respect from us in Boise when he did his pre-season WAC overview and misspelled TWO of our player's names, AND our coach. he also talked about how our team is used to playing in "bad weather" -- crystal-clear proof that he's as clueless as alberts is ugly.

frankly, there are very few "fair" members of the national college football covering media. Matt Hayes with Sporting News has been very kind to mid-majors, and Dennis Dodd seems to be coming around (though he used to be a tool, too.)

but alberts and james are stink bug feces. can't stand those two schmucks.

If I had to take one or the other, I'd take Trev over May. In my estimation, Trev at least has made an effort to become presentable, though he still hasn't gotten over the hump. May on the other hand, he's always got that smug look on his face, speaks in absolutes and gives off this air of "I'm right, that's why I don't need to back up my position with logic. I think it, thus it's true." Of course, a lot of my hatred of May comes from this remark from 2002....

Ohio State v. Purdue. Tight game which was on the edge of killing what I was hoping would be a dream season. Then, on 4th and 1 Krenzel hits Jenkins for six and OSU goes on to win the "Holy Buckeye" game. I'm AMPED UP! I mean, a close game, so much on the line, and Ohio State, my team, actually pulls it out... So, I happen along to ESPN to see what games are on, and its halftime for whatever game. May and Alberts are babbling on, and then May says.....

What an ugly win, against an opponant they should have blown out. Ohio State doesn't even deserved to be ranked.

What?!?!?! Doesn't even deserve to be ranked......

Friggin moron.

I disagree with you about Herbie. Before you say, "Of course you do, Herbie's an OSU guy, you're an OSU guy" let me say, that's not the reason. (I don't think Clark Kellogg is any better an announcer, for example, and Speilman isn't the best guy in the booth either.) My reason for disagreement is that Herby does his homework better than anyother talking head. That he misspelled two players names and your coach's name does shock me - especially inlight of my "homework" contention. Sloppy, for sure, but I doubt seriously that he "just doens' t care about BSU football." He's always had great things to say about Hawkins on his local Columbus radio show) I'd hope it was a typo, but who knows. In any event, I don't always agree with Herbie, I thought his prediction that ND was "back" last year was a poor one, but at least he gave us a reason he thinks so. Most announcers analysis contains the following type of remarks. "USC will win this game. they're claerly the best. Reggie Bush can't be stopped."

It's the same formula for every review, hype popular team, call them unstoppable, point to star player, call him unstoppable. Move on to next topic. Herbie, on the other hand, will at least give a reason why he's taking A over B and in the limited amount of time he gets to do it, comes up with something different than "Braylon Edwards can catch anything within 30 yards of him."

I will say, putting Herbie at the top of the list (in my opinion) doesn't mean he the Walter Cronkite of college football, he suffers some of the same faults every other broadcaster does. That is to say, he's FAR from perfect. I'd say ALL the football analysists should step up their game. Fans are too smart now. We want actual analysis, not BS hype. Hype a game in a commercial, analyze a game when the pre-game show is on.

JoeFalcon,

THAT is the reason I can't stand Craig James. This guy rips the "Mid Majors" left and right but he didn't play at a BCS school. Like SMU is anything?

Ah, yes, SMU isn't a "Major." But, at the time, SMU was as corrupt as ESPN would like to have people believe OSU is today. SMU was eventually issued the "death sentence" for its unprecedented cheating.
