re: herstreit --

he may do his homework for BCS teams, but it's clear he doesn't for most non-BCS conferences. for example, he nailed wisconsin a couple of times last year regarding how they were overachievers, which i felt all along in watching the badgers squeak by games week after week.

however, herbstreit's analysis of Boise State was moronic. in one of his columns, he mentioned a RB for us that WASN'T EVEN ON THE TEAM. that wasn't a typo; that was misinformation. he's also botched players and coaches for Fresno and Oregon State.

and later in the year, he consistently referred to Boise as a "pass-happy offense". if he had actually done his homework, he'd have seen that BSU ran more than we threw, for more yards, and scored more than twice as many touchdowns on the ground (49) than through the air.

maybe herbstreit's better with eastern teams. but if he's supposed to be a 1A college football expert for ALL teams, so far he's shown very little knowledge of any non-USC team in the west.

Totally random ramblings...

Post by Ineedbotox »

I don't know why I missed this thread earlier, but it cracked me up!:

You're welcome for the Phat Phree transfer2bgsu. It rocks!

Freak: Craig James is really a good guy. He used to live in my same town, but he moved out in the boonies near Deion Sanders. He is really solid. SMU may not have been "major" but with him & Dickerson, it was as good as it gets. SMU was awesome until they got busted.

Jackie Sherrill recruited my husband at A&M. He wanted to go there, but he thought Jackie was an a-hole, so he didn't go there.

And boisebro, quit hating on Herbstreit. He's hot.

Go Falcons!

I'd submit Southern Methodist was major.

The Southwest Conference was the real deal.

My husband played SWC. He & all his buddies still hang out together & do fantasy football & their league is called "SWC Lives." Their dream is to resurrect the SWC. That will never happen though b/c of $$$.

The Southwest was great. I groove on the MAC because I'd like to think it has just a little bit of that charm (less the scandals, of course).

James may be a great guy to hang out with over a few beers, but he comes across as a pompous, arrogant windbag on TV, regardless of how well he performed in college. James, May and Albert are the main reasons I do not watch the studio segments of ESPN's college football coverage. When they are gone, I'll return. I can deal with typical bland talking heads, but James, et al, are significant detriments to the program(s).

Here's a roundabout connection to BG:

Phil Bennett is now the head coach at SMU.

He was previosely the DC at Kansas State and a good friend of Urban Meyer who filled him in on a prospect from Florida who they had to drop because they had all their scholarships filled....Omar Jacobs.

Well, I don't doubt what you've said. As I conceeded, even Herbie isn't the "perfect" announcer/writer. If it's true, and I don't have any reason to think its not, that he mentioned a RB for us that wasn't on your team thats nothing short of embarrassing for him.

I think you're probably right that he researches BCS teams closer, I think the demands of his job provoke some of that, but that's not to say he shouldn't take the midmajors more seriously. My point is that, more people nationwide want to hear about USC than they do about Boise. So, his focus on BCS teams is, in those terms, understandable. Does it make it right? No. But understandable in part.

I'd ask you, of the national guys, who does a better job than Herbstreit? Why do you think so?

If an announcer screws up players on my team, I would no doubt count that as a major strike against him. But, looking past that, what else bothers you about Herbie?

When the NCAA went into tOSU they NEVER talked to Maurice Clarett. They said they tried to get in touch with him, but just never could get it together. Isn't he one of the reasons they came in, with all the ESPN magazine mouthiness?

Can you tell me any place else that these accusations would be made and the NCAA would not be camping on the doorstep of the complainer??

Maybe I'm reading too much in to what you're suggesting here, but explain to me how that would be Ohio State's problem? Ohio State can't make Maurice talk any more than the NCAA can.

The NCAA does the best it can with the authority it has. Maurice changed his story so many times, it's impossible to know what he might have said to the NCAA had he talked. And, it's not like the NCAA only tried to get a hold of him once. (you put "Never" in all caps as if the NCAA didn't do enough.) They called him multiple times, sent letters to his address, and his mother's address, they spoke to Clarett's attorney's about how to get in touch with Maurice (I belive they also sent people to his last known address, unannounced on several occassions (though I'm not positive, thus the parens)). Maurice ducked the NCAA, and it's quite different than the NCAA just not bothering to track him down. You can't make a guy talk, it's just that simple.

I find your implication that Ohio State - as an institution - got lucky that Mo C didn't talk. Don't forget, the NCAA did talk to Mo back in 03, when this all started happening. The large portion of "new" allegations in the Tom Friend ESPN article weren't new at all and had already been the subject to the NCAA committee's review.

Anyway, I'll you tell you "any place else that these accusations would be made and the NCAA would not be camping on the doorstep of the complainer." Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida State, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, SMU, OURkansas, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, Syracuse, Miami Fla, Miami Oh, BGSU, Kent St., Indiana, Minnesota, Virginia, West Virginia... see where I'm going with this?

I don't know, guy, it seems to me you're trying to mold the facts and circumstances in a manner that makes it easy to believe what you already believe. Fact is, the NCAA didn't cut OSU any breaks. They were "on campus" looking in to Ohio State's program for almost 2 years, and found only one thing - that Ohio State was right when it self reported that Troy Smith took money from a booster. 2 Years of investigation. What more do you want?

Bleeding Orange - So sorry, it won't happen again... unless, I'm talking about an officer who happens to be a Major and is standing in the middle of something. :D

He spits motor oil on people and drives in impossible ways, i.e. on walls and such. Also I am so jealous that Lindsay Lohan sat on him for hours.

Seriously - he has always denegrated non BCS teams. I think it was the multiple interceptions he threw against BGSU in 1992. I remember vividly him saying that we were physical and it was like playing a Big Ten team and he wasn't expecting that.

But now, we get no respect. It is either no mention of us at all or denegrating. WHen Gameday was in BG It seemed to me that Herbstreit was uncomfortable with the game and was not comfortable with NIU and BG. He knew the basics, but to me, that was the only week he ever said anything significant or complimentary about us. If we were in a BCS conference with our rankings the past 3 years, he would know who Anthony Turner is.
