Field Turf sucks because of those little rubber pellets. They get in your shoes and annoy the crap out of you. I'm with hammb, I love the mud...I mean grass!

So, you will also quit attending Falcon football games if the Dolt switches over to Field turf?

When I go to Rocket football games, I go to watch the guys on the field play, I dont go to watch the surface they are playing on. You birds truly are a different breed.

how many pro teams use field turf

Post by jerzyboy247 »

I was woundering how many pro teams use field turf. I don't think many teams use field turf because it is not natural and I know that the Browns and Steelers use real grass. I think Detroit is the only team that uses field turf but is there any more?

There are a lot more than just the Lions. There are numerous NFL stadiums and practice facilities of NFL teams that feature the FieldTurf brand alone.

Here are some NFL teams that use it in their game facilities:

Seahawks
Falcons
Lions
Bills
Saints
Vikings
Cowboys
Ravens
Bengels
Jets
Giants
Colts - just put it in
Rams - just put it in

Here are some NFL teams that have practice facilities with it:

Raiders
Titans
Jaquars
Steelers - indoor
Browns - indoor
Patriots - indoor
Texans - indoor
Packers - indoor
Chiefs - indoor

Here's a link for Fieldturf, click on the link and scroll down towards the bottom of the page and wait a second as the scroller loads up. Once it does, there is a scrolling chart of football helmets for all the Fieldturf installations so far. Click on the helmet and it shows you the facility it is used in. There are a bunch of big-name D-I colleges listed here too. This doesn't even factor in all the other surfaces similar to FieldTurf.

Shouldn't this thread title read "BG will be the last MAC school with a *painted sand* field"?

I consider myself a traditionalist and was wary of Miami's move to the FieldTurf, but the combination of late-season weather conditions and the ability to host more events at Yager (like HS playoff games, which, definitionally, get pretty good football players to visit the campus) sold me on it.

Under the prior AD, the FieldTurf also was pitched as part of a plan eventually to purchase an inflatable bubble to put over the field during the winter months to facilitate indoor workouts for a variety of Miami's athletic teams. If you want to see what one of those looks like, BC has one. I'm not sure if that's still on Brad Bates's to-do list.

I've played on fieldturf quite a few times and love the stuff. You make great cuts, it looks and feels like grass, and its soft to fall on. I would think that you run faster on it to, which would be an advantage to our high speed offense, ala the St. Louis Rams. I wouldn't mind one bit seeing it, I personally think it fits our team and its image.

I'd rather see grass then the Astroplay toledo plays on.... that stuff is so slick when it rains... you see it glisten like a big sheet of ice... I believe that Kent State/Akron has Astroplay... the company went out of business and they replaced their field for a second time with NexTurft.

Do I like NexTurf??? I like to make sure that the field of play doesn't determine who wins and loses. I liked that the tigers had kentucky blue grass and it was cut extra long to slow ground balls down... but I hated the fact that at Yankee stadium that tilted the field so that bunts hugged the line or went foul.

I think that BG would be better off with the NexTurf for recruiting purposes and bringing in HS football games... but that is their decision... it wouldve been great to have had BGHS vs. some toledo schools down in BG for the state playoffs instead of having to go to the ghetto...

Did you ever attend an OSU game in the 70s-80s?
No. I never attended an OSU game until the Shoe was redone. Football was meant for grass. I don't like watching games played on FieldTurf a whole lot more than I like watching games played on the old style turf.

I like games outside, in the elements, with mud.

You woud be surprised. A good install of field turf and you really can't tell the difference between grass and field turf.

It only makes sense to put in field turf because it won't get muddy (although that is fun to watch at times) when you have a back to back home games and needs to be resodded before the next game.

And Field Turf is yet to be installed in St. Louis...it is in the works though.

I share his passion as well.

FieldTurf is a nice approximiation of grass.

But why in the world would we get the fake stuff when we already have the real thing?

I understand fake grass would be cheaper to maintain. I also undersand we could probably raise more coin with it by hosting high school playoff games and what not.

I don't really care.

Football was made for grass. Ohio invented the pro game, for goodness sake. I work about a block from the first NFL offices here in Columbus.

Does anyone really think when the Portsmouth Spartans squared off with the Green Bay Packers, the players were thinking "Gee, I wish I had a fancier modern surface to play on that wouldn't soil my uniform so?"

(No!)

Grass makes us different. Let's stick with it.

It's worth whatever we are paying, in my mind.

Obviously I was not being 100% serious by saying I'd quit attending, but I made my point. I hate field turf, nexturf, astroturf, or anything that is not grass. We currently have grass, the real thing, why should we try to find the best artificial stuff that will try to emulate what we already have?

I saw that someone said they make great cuts and feel faster on fieldturf, but my observation is that it seems more slick than real grass, and that players have less traction on it. I cannot stand seeing those stupid rubber pellets flying through the air either.

We have grass. Football was meant for grass. I hope to god tha the administration never changes that.

Call me old school but I LOVE our grass field. It is beautiful and well kept. Sure, late in the season it can get rough. So what?

I do like the NextTurf a lot of stadiums have now. It looks good, I just like the natural grass surface better.
