As a maggot I can say that Quigleys are still done, but as Flicc said they've been moved to after rehearsal. Yes the maggots still hold a majority of their traditions, but we'll see after this year. Yes, there has been talk among the higherups about killing the name "maggots", but we'll see. I would rather not see that die. We've been Maggots for over 20yrs. and dag gum it we'll continue to be maggots for years to come.
I personally feel that the traditions are what make the band what it is! To see them pass away because this person or that person doesn't like them is ridiculous. They'll be gone in a few years but the tradition should live on.

I think that this "whippling" has occurred simply because the director has nothing do since the director doesn't actually ever run rehearsal, or write drill, or arrange music, or wait, what else might a director do? Oh wait, I've got it, program coordination.......wait, the director doesn't do that either.......hmmmmmmm, I wanna job where I get paid to hire people to do my job all year. Oh yeah, also remember, quantity is WAY more important than quality..........not to knock on the guy, cause he ended up doing alright, but the director took a kid on tenors this year who had never played them before..................and oh yeah, whatever happened to alternates.......i don't suppose I'd be too motivated to pass my music tests if I knew that it didn't matter anyway........the most important tradition that the band has lost is its standards.........

This is true. What DID happen to alternates? What happened to pride? WHAT HAPPENED TO CUTS, DAME-IT! Seriously, I kinda liked knowing that if I dont keep my stuff tight and together that they'll let someone take my place. It's a good idea and I wanna see it again!

There is nothing wrong with speaking your mind and having opinions - it's how you express them that may make the difference.MatrixBass3 wrote:woah mikey, be careful, speaking your mind and having good ideas are the kinds of things that get you on the FMB blacklist............you'd better watch out! hahahahaha :ugh:

I can and have disagreed with her on multiple occasions, and imagine that, I DON'T find myself shutting off from anything and everything FMB.MatrixBass3 wrote:Wrong, wrong, wrong.................it's about expressing an opinion that agrees with those in charge.
I'm not sticking up for her in the sense that she's the best director ever, but I would like to point out how we are both perceived as a result of how we act around her.

I agree with Emily. Yes, it's sad when traditions die off, and it's even sadder when they are killed off. But there are several traditions that have developed over the past few years that I can think of, at least within the mello section. It's really neat to be there when traditions began and know their origin and meaning. It's like "Drumline;" we can mix the old school with the new school.
... Yeah, I know that was bad...

ok jackie, yes, that was horrendous. probably the worst joke ever.
i've been a perc/drumline person/whatever for 3, going on 4, years now. I remember quite clear the stories and legends told to me of Buffo's glory days, the infamous "Snowball Fight Quigley" of November 2002, mooing in the moo hole, and of course, referring to the Tubas as "maggots". I've been an unfortunate victim of el quigley on about 2 occasions, both my first year, and b/c of that, i'm rather punctual now. I've also been priviliged to the secrets of my own section...which I will not devulge here, however, it is our traditions that make us who we are. I'm suprised we still play Hey Baby at the end of the 3rd...oh wait, we've seemed to start straying from that too.
I agree that "Whippleing" has more than run its course within the FMB. However, despite the "cleansing" of our traditions, there are some people who will not simply allow this to happen. For example, occasionally you'll see "Buffo" written on a chalkboard in the CMA...and not in a corner, oh no, but in plain view. does that really do anything? Yes and no. No in the fact that a person can erase it without a thought. Yes, in that, people start to wonder....but maybe thats just me.
i guess my biggest reply here will go in regards to the "cymbal birthdays". in the past years, since i've been here, we would sing to the lucky person BEFORE dismissal and the cymbals would circle up around them and go nutz. NOW, it's sung AFTER dismissal during section meetings, and the tradition is starting to die. for this, i say BOO. and I also say, i'm the cymbal leadership this year...2+2=4.
thats all i got. maybe i'm just a tradition person.

I never realized playing Hey Baby at the end of the 3rd quarter WAS a set tradition. I guess I just thought it tended to happen, since it's a long song that can't be finished except at a break, and we like it so we want to play it a lot. *shrugs*
As for cymbal birthdays, that does make me kinda sad, although I understand the reasoning behind wanting to wait until AFTER practice is over. Every minute counts, etc etc.

There was never a set song for the 3rd quarter. Although during my time it was either Beer Barrel or At the Hop. End of 1st quarter was Shout which freaking rocked the house.
I would love to resurrect that for next year's homecoming. I would direct since it takes a "certain someone".
