The black isn't a mistake.
The university basically let's em do it.
Links aren't handy, but BGSUFalconz previously posted a link where the appropriate use of our athletic logos is spelled out in great detail, along with the correct Pantone colors, etc.
I haven't studied that thing in great detail, but quick glance suggests the university accepts the use of black in these situations. (And even if the style document doesn't prove it, it seems to me the university would get to approve gear designs before it is sold.)
Fact is, the university is fine with BGSU stuff being sold in orange and black. This isn't something they have advertised to people like us -- when the new logos were unveiled, they made a point of saying that brown was still being upheld as a Bowling Green color.
But the fact is, the university is allowing black.
I don't like it. But those appear to be the facts.

I now it is not a mistake. My point is that a casual fan who thought the school colors were brown and orange might make the mistake of thinking the colors are really black and orange.
Many teams do highlights and/or accents in black because it is such a marketable color. The problem here is that black is supplanting our primary color, not enhancing it.
I know the University endorses this change, but I think it is stupid. Would the Browns allow somebody to make their hats with black instead of brown just because it is more popular? Hell no, and neither should we.

FWIW, I think the Browns would, in fact, sell black hats if they thought they could sell a bundle of them.

I was waiting for somebody to say it. The more different styles of BG gear that are out there the better. Flood the market I say.
That way people like me, who have hated the Browns their entire life and therefore despise the color brown, have some more options when buying BG gear (Although I'll buy 10 orange hats before I buy a black one). Funny, I never realized how much I love the color orange until I started at BG. Now it's probably the most prevalent color in my t-shirt wardrobe.
Also, Kids love these different color styles. Like Philip Morris says, hook 'em early. This is evident by freakin green yankee hats I see 12-year olds wearing all the time.

if you are a "hardcore" fan then you should be way more likely to buy a hat that isnt in the actual school colors, if you were just a fair weather or casual fan then you would want the real deal, but for me who already has umpteen different BG hats, shirts, coats, jackets, flags, etc etc.. yea the Brown and Orange does get a little old, and no not b/c im not "hardcore" but b/c even though i love orange and its my favorite color, sometimes im tired of everything looking like a damn road cone, so i go with my black or white BG stuff, im not a BIG fan of the lime greens and pink stuff for BG, but thats only b/c it really is associated more for girls IMO.Warthog wrote:Yes, I know. And as others mentioned, the bookstores sell lime green, pink, purple, fuschia, etc t-shirts, shorts, sweats, whatever. And it is all done for marketing reasons. Girls prefer those pastely colors. They will buy BG logo stuff in those colors because it matches their purse or shoes.Falcon52 wrote:You guys are looking to much into the color. Lids also sells a green Yankees cap and a black Indians hat.
You can get Yankee hats in any color you want. But that is an urban-wear thing. Gotto show your colors if you know what I mean.
But the black for brown thing just doesn't fly with the hardcore fan. They will wear the team colors no matter how ugly they might be (Astros from the seventies or Padres brown and mustard) There is a fine line in switching from brown to black. The other color switches noted above are obvious and are for fashion-related reasons. Switching brown and black makes you think that is was a mistake, not intentional.
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

Orange and Brown NEVER gets old for the Freak. The more, the better.

The hockey team has everything in orange and black, which makes me totally nuts, but what can you do??? I won't stop supporting the team, but I HATE it that this "transition" is happening. :wah: I really hate it....A LOT.Schadenfreude wrote:The black isn't a mistake.

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

And it was debunked.
