Help learning the team...

As a new fan of BG Football, I do not have a good working knowledge of the team. I know Omar but then my knowledge drops off.

Give me an overview of the team. What type of offense and defense? What players should I look for?

For help with the names you should buy NCAA 06 for PlayStation2, lol. I have a feeling you don't play video games, but it has helped me a lot. I named all the players the last couple of years and I'll do the same this year. It is a tremendous help.

As much as some of us complain about CFN.com sometimes, they actually did a decent job on this season's preview. Take a look at the link below, it should help you out a great deal in learning some of the starters for 2005.

First of all, BG's football roster SHOULD be on BGSU.com...select football from left side of screen, then click on roster.

Obviously, Omar is getting the most hype, but other significant players to watch: On Offense - PJ Pope, at RB is exciting, both as a ballcarrier and receiver out of the backfield, Other RB's - BJLane, Dan Macon should get most playing time...At WR Steve Sanders and Charles Sharon are the most experienced returnees with several RS freshman, Marques Parks being one, others whose names escape me for the moment as I try to give you this quick overview. Offensive linemen Rob Warren (T) and Kory Leichtensteiger(G) are again most experienced returnees with a lot of other guys who served as backups last year, ready to step in. BG runs their offense almost exclusively from a spread formation with QB in shotgun, and 4 or 5 WR's. The TE has not been used much in the offense, but there are signs that this might be changing as we've signed several TE's in last 2 years.

Defensively, we've got a lot of rebuilding to do... we've lost several quality DL's, either to grades or disciplinary measures... Devon Parks at DE is a solid "rush" end who'll be a junior. Mike Thaler and Monty Cooley will be in the mix at DT's, along with several RS Freshmen.
LB's will be led by Teddy Piepkow, with several others who had significant playing time last year ready to go. This, in my opinion, might be the strength of the Defense, though a bit "undersized" unless guys like Haneline etc. step in.
CB's and S will need major reworking, based on last year....we lost both starting safeties, and the returning CB's are ok, but not great IMO. Pass defense overall needs to be improved, from the DL to the S spots, so this might prove to be the team's achilles' heel unless some guys really step it up... There are quality athletes who were redshirted last year, so we can hope that they'll be able to do the job.

Kicking game was solid last year with our PK setting a NCAA record for total XP's... But Joe Temchenko will inherit the job and it's not clear how solid he'll be. (was primarily a backup punter last year).
I'm sure other guys can fill you in even more, but this should be a start.

Jelani Jordan is easy to spot on gameday. You'll see him running madly arms flailing as he tries to catch up to the WR who's got 5 steps and the ball heading his way

Seriously, '61 did as good of a job as anyone could do listing the players to keep an eye on.

If I were giving a list of who to REALLY watch on Saturdays at the Doyt I'd say:

Kory Leichtensteiger & Rob Warren (sorry I'm an OL fan)
Pope
Sharon
Sanders
I'm gonna put Corey Partridge in here too, he opened eyes at the spring game big time.

On defense watch Parks, he's got a good first step.
Piepkow is real good to, although I'm not big on watching LBs.
What I really like to watch is the DB/WR battle downfield. This is where I'd recommend AGAINST watching Jelani Jordan. My roommate and I did it a few games last year, and in fact I think Jordan is worse than most here give him credit for, and that's saying something.

Seriously, I don't know the kid, but he's probably a great guy. On top of that I really have no reason to fault his effort, I think he tries at 100%. I just know that focusing on him for stretches of plays you'll see him continually get beaten on just about every play.

I just don't think he's got the hips/recovery speed to play CB. He does seem to make a lot of plays on the ball when he isn't beaten real badly. Perhaps he'd be better suited at safety where he could react to the ball as opposed to trying to man up on somebody?

I'd love to be on here in 6 months eating my words as JJ wins the Thorpe, but from what I've seen he is definitely a weak link in our defense.

Another thing you may want to try is getting a hold of a media guide. There is an option when you get a season tix form to get a media guide for $10. I get one every year and they are WELL worth the $$. You may try calling 877-BGSUTICKETS and see if you can get one.

I think Jordan takes way too much abuse around here. If you think he is so so bad why don't you make fun of his backups, they can't be any better. I think he is overrated by sports publications but I think he is underrated by folks around here. He is certainly not the only player that has given up long pass plays but we like to pretend it is only him for some reason. Patten, Newson, and others have burned pleanty too over the past couple of years.

I agree with Kdog on Jordan. I don't think he is nearly as bad as perceived. Last year there were plenty of breakdowns in the secondary when the safties didn't do their job correctly. Jordan has made some great plays at BG and given up some big plays. If there is one guy I want to see have a GREAT SR season, it's Jordan.

I'm with hammb that I would love to eat crow about Jordan. I'm with you, too, that if there's one guy I want to have a banner senior year, it's Jelani Jordan. I hope he shuts me, hammb and his other critics here up in the first week and doesn't let up until our Jan. 1 bowl victory.

JJ is in a position to do that or totally flame out this year. Patten is gone. Keon is gone. Carswell is gone. He is the man in the secondary.
