Toledo's down, but not out of anything.....yet

Post by BGSU33 »

I know we are all enjoying the early struggles of Toledo, I am no exception to that. But before we all get too carried away their struggles, let's just remember, the Rockets are 0-0 in the MAC. Something tells me this same team that has been beaten 63 to whatever in the non-conference is going to fair a lot better in the MAC. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but I have a feeling they are going to be in the MAC race when it comes down the stretch. I think if somehow EMU could manage to beat UT this weekend, it could break their backs. But if Toledo comes out on top and beats EMU, they could start getting it going. In the mean time, let's go EMU! :supz:

I said it before - the only thing that matters - this year in particular - is the MAC schedule. Even if we had lost to SE Mizzou & eventually Temple, we could run the table in the MAC, end the season at 8-3, win the MACC game and go to a bowl. Toledo can do the same. oh-for-OOC is bad, but not a bakcbreaker by any means.

That's right, whether UT lost 63-14 or 7-6, a loss is a loss. Although it was pretty funny seeing them get spanked. But if UT beats EMU and BG loses to NIU, who's in better shape? That's the point. Fact of the matter is, just like most every year, the MAC schedule is where it really counts for MAC teams. Unless you win against a BCS team, your non-conference schedule in the long run is pretty much a prep coarse for the conference. There are certainly exceptions, but in most cases, the conference schedule will make or break your season.

What counts is the MAC. What is fun is UT getting beaten down like a baby seal. Besides, if they drop another game, and they almost certainly will, they are out of the MAC race, and they won't have any fans there even if they were to manage to beat us.

Lets also be realistic. They have to go on the road to EMU, WMU, Miami, and NIU, before getting us. I don't see Miami dropping a game to them. nor NIU. WMU and EMU are dangerous games for them.

Their road is a nasty one to take.

I'll be interested to see how they do against Temple.

Yeah, Toledo goes have a pretty tough MAC road schedule, as do we. That's why our game at NIU is HUGE. Because if you look at NIU's schedule, their's is favorable to both BG's and UT's. That's why we've got to get the win on the 24th, it'll put us in the driver's seat in the MAC West.

Even if Toledo lost all of it's games leading to the BG game, I still wouldn't be overly confident heading into the glass bowl. A rivalry is a rivalry anything can happen especially when two teams hate eachother.

I agree, one must mind where one steps at UT. However, this looks like the best season in many years, where BGSU has a good chance of beating them. That is something we used to do not that long ago.

I was actually at the game as a student the last time BG beat UT in the Glass Bowl. October 15, 1994 .... BG 31, UT 16. It was a good day!

I did that game on radio, from the tent on top of the press box/hotel at the glass bowl. I remember it being cold. Or at least windy. I wish I remembered my exact line at one point when a plane flew overhead, though it was some kind of a PG version of Rodney Dangerfield's line in Caddyshack "I almost got head from Amelia Earhart!"

I remember my friend's car broke down that night on our way home from that game after we stopped at a McDonald's or something to get a quick bite to eat before we headed back to BG. While we sat there in the cold and dark night, of all people that could be driving through McDonald's that night, one happened to be former BG basketball player Denny Amrhein. Now there's a name we haven't said in a while! Denny and I knew one another so he stopped and helped us jump-start my buddies car, and then we were off.

You know it was a good night (BG beating UT in the Glass Bowl) when your car breaks down in Toledo, Ohio and you're in a good mood despite that facts you're stranded in the dark and cold. We could have cared less, the win that night was a great one! :drinkers:

Denny Amrhein.

Now there is a name from the past. One of many many players that left while Jimbo was in charge of the basketball program. And people think Dakich has some kind of issue with that.

That 1994 game was awesome. The consensus in our group (that included 5 UT grads to 3 from BG) was that our team was a group of men playing a group of boys.

I honestly think that that was Blackney's best team.
