Bowling Green basketball coach Dan Dakich can sympathize with Stephenson's plight, too. In 2002, he left BGSU for West Virginia and spent a week in April as the Mountaineers' coach. Due in part to possible NCAA rules violations that he uncovered in speaking with players, Dakich ended up returning to Bowling Green.

He found that Falcons' fans were fairly accepting.

"I think, with the money involved, people understood for the most part," he said Tuesday while driving to the All-Star Game in Detroit. "It really was not an issue."

For Dakich's players, it was an issue. They let him know that upon his return.

"There was some hurt feelings," Dakich said. "It was, I don't know if it was uncomfortable, but I let everyone say their piece. And when you let them say their piece, they tend to have a piece. Some kids, quite frankly, were hurt, feeling like you abandoned them."
