We met in law school in MI, so he was excited to scope out UM & Michigan State's stadiums. He was duly impressed After we graduated though, we had to go up to a wedding in Columbus. It was one of the guys he played with, & a bunch of them wanted to see OSU's stadium. About 6 of the guys & their wives (including me) went up to the Horseshoe. I had been there a bunch, but none of them had ever seen it.

ALL 6 of the guys said what a total s*#thole that place was. A security guard came by & ran us off, my H said "don't worry, we're leaving. This place sucks!"
there is a lot of history in ohio stadium and it is one of the biggest in the country.. i'd say UofM, tennessee and ohio state are the top 3 in the country. love em or hate em..ohio stadium a shithole? i think NOT
I don't know about the football side of things, but Ohio Stadium was probably one of the five best and most historic track and field venues in the country until the greedheads in Columbus screwed that up. Tearing out Jesse Owens's track was well nigh onto unforgiveable in my book.

[quote="BGSUVA"]two questions. 1) I notice Duke being mentioned a lot, what games did you see them play? I used to have season tickets there, and trust me, not very many people show up to see them, so I'm surprised that 2 or 3 others here have, unless we had a series with them like a decade or so ago. 2) for those who have been to UVA's stadium, which games?

1. I saw Virginia play there a few times (I work at UVa).

2. Since I work at Virginia, I've seen about every game played from 1997-present at "The Carl Smith Center, Home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium." Yes, that is actually the full name of the facility!!! And they wonder why people just refer to it as Scott Stadium......

Whoa. Put the claws back, kitty. History happened on the track they covered up. Of course, the actual surface of the track was covered up many times, but one of the greatest athletes of all time ran there. Not two blocks up the street, but right there, along what is now row 10 or whatever. I don't even know that there's any kind of monument in Ohio Stadium dedicated to him. Which while I won't say is an atrocity or anything, it's certainly an oversight that would be nice if it were reconciled.

I was quite impressed by Commonwealth Stadium when I arrived here. I have yet to go to a game, but I'm going to try to remedy that by attending the UK-Florida game. I will be sure to wear my BG clothes and attempt to get Urban's attention.

There is a plaque at the front entrance to Ohio Stadium honoring Jessie Owens. At first I was upset about the removal of the track but it was a move up for the track and field program at Ohio State. I attended a Big Ten championship at OSU when the track was inside Ohio Stadium. "A" deck wasn't even full, and the place looked empty. Now there is a modern facility, that is amazing, and meets with even a decent crowd look full. It is a much more intimate and electric atmosphere.

I stand corrected. I guess I never went in that way, so I didn't notice. Carry on.

he is in the hall of fame, they named the whole damn track and field stadium after him, there is a memorial plaque as journey pointed out...i believe that is enough reconciliation i think they even have a scholarship named after him. hell archie griffin prolly will never even have that much and he won two heisman trophies only player to do so. i guess they should have kept the turf he used to play on too because it was a historical era?????
like i said evil because ohio state made some needed improvements to the stadium..if you ask me the track looked tacky. now it is the sweetest stadium around. followed by the michigan and tennessee IMO any of those three in any order really work for me.

Much better. If you would have said all that without the facetious attitude and the "woe is us" slant at the end of your first post, it would have been no biggie.

that said, there is another forum for this (which I don't know why the thread wasn't there in the first place, good thread idea, though!), and I'm done with it.

I believe DG was referring directly to altering the structural history of the horseshoe.

I agree with him.

The track and field facility they have here -- named for Jesse Owens -- truly is something to behold. It's a heck of a tribute.

Ohio State did the right thing in getting the track out of Ohio Stadium.

Please tell me you didn't just mention Archie Griffin and Jesse Owens in the same breath . . . and imply that the former was more worthy of respect than the latter. I'm trying to think well of you people.

That track didn't look any more "tacky" than the track in the L.A. Colisseum, and it had nearly as much history behind it. The entire project was just a cash grab by a department that already has more money than sense.

I'm sad to hear that the Big Ten meet hasn't been that big a draw in recent years. I used to go to the OSHAA meet down there annually back when it drew a big crowd (including a very amusing group of guys who made odds and took bets on all the sprints), and the atmosphere for track and field was rivaled only by Franklin Field (Penn Relays), the Colisseum, and the University of Oregon. I hope they can carve out a new tradition at the new place, but you'll note that the HS meet has been moved to Dayton -- which just isn't the same.

UK Peregrine,

Yes, I was actually pretty surprised with Kentucky's stadium too, it's pretty nice now after all those renovations. It reminds me a little bit of North Carolina's stadium, except for one of the end zones. It's not too big, not too small, and seems to be a pretty good fit for UK. My fiancee's parents both went to UK, but don't really talk much about football as it's all about Big Blue Hoops. Now if they could only get a little more competitive in football.... :)
