Future opponents

Did USF have to pay some kind of penalty for that BS? Anyone know? It sucked because we had to play two 1-AA teams that year. It would have been nice to play USF instead of Liberty as a tuneup for OSU in 2003.

Schellenberger coaches at Florida Atlantic. He's done some good things there. They opened last season with wins over Hawaii, North Texas and Middle Tennessee State before starting to fade as the season went on.

Florida International's coach is Don Strock, and they aren't as impressive right now. They went 3-7 last year -- a transitional year into I-A -- with all three wins against I-AA programs. Losses were to Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, New Mexico State, Georgia Southern, Western Kentucky, and Florida Atlantic.

This FIU news was on http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/8593135 back on June 24th. We all must have missed it, so thanks WH for posting that we play FIU. Anyways, here's the snippet that mentions our future games with FIU.

FIU, which is entering only its fourth season of football, is following the same plan. Strock knows they won't get any better unless his squad plays some of the big boys, too.

"Kansas State, Texas Tech this year, then (in the future) South Florida, Kansas, Alabama, Bowling Green, Maryland and on and on and on," said Strock. "That should interest a lot of student athletes and hopefully pay off in the long run."

Ok, here are the details from the report:

""It's my understanding there is limited interest (from Big Ten teams) in playing Bowling Green," Krebs said. "That's more of a condition of our success. We are certainly in the mix...but people aren't beating a path to play us. And I understand that. If we were 0-11, it might be a different story."

By virtue of the size of their home stadiums and their drawing power, Krebs said there is no way Ohio State, Michigan, or Penn State would play at a MAC school.

If the BG-Wisconsin game in Cleveland goes as planned, Krebs says Bowling Green "certainly would look to do more games like that. We are in various stages of negotiations with other teams about other neutral site games."

Aaaaaand.... exhale.

While I certainly would love to see as many games played at the Doyt as possible, if using Cleveland Browns Stadium provides a substantial financial boost to our program, I don't see how we can be anything but pleased with it, especially considering our large alumni base in NE Ohio.

I like all of those future matchups to some degree (yes, even the FIUs since they are, at least, 1-A), but 2008 looks like a very nice start. That is the kind of schedule BG needs to make serious BCS noise. If BG could add a home game with a top C-USA, MWC, or WAC team, we would be in business. That would also give some flexibility as to what to do with the 4th non-conference game. 2006 looks awesome too if BG can get a road game against a B!G-time opponent.

I believe the soon to be finalized MAC/Big 10 scheduling agreement for an added 12th game each season runs from 2006-10. So, I think many of our as yet undetermined games during that period would be with Big 10 teams.

I'm beginning to hope that we have seen the end of Div 1AA opponents.

They paid us something like $150,000 IIRC to get out of coming to BG. They did that so they could schedule a 1AA team at home..

I guess my understanding is that Bowling Green is hanging loose and seeing if a Big Ten game is set up for 2006 as part of some global MAC-Big Ten agreement. Do I have that right, Warthog?

If that doesn't happen, I hope we go back to what was rumored and move the Pittsburgh (or Missouri) road game up to 2006.

That won't be a lucrative game for us, and we have to play it at some point or pay what I imagine would be a sizable penalty. It would be nice to get it out of the way.

Thanks for clarifying that, SF. I mixed them up.

On the bright side, it would be a road trip to Miami for the FIU game.
